You can try several things. The radiator fan is controlled by a thermal switch and in some cases the A/C maximum air setting. Do you know if the fan is turning on? Some have 2 speeds. The thermostat is a low cost guess.
The engine idle can be affected by overheating. Also turn off the A/C and see if that makes a difference in idle or overheating.
overheats at idle only are typically the fan system. Cars use the fan to pull air across the radiator for cooling. Any speed over 10 mph there is more than enough natural wind to do this without a fan. If the problem immediately goes away when you start moving, it is probably a malfunction or issue with the fan. I have on more than 1 occaision had a customer tell me they had the fan replaced and car was still overheating, and it ended up thje fan was spinning backwards or not turning on because of a fuse or relay issue.
If it doesnt cool down fully once speed is above 20mph for more than 30 seconds, there may be other issues like plugged radiator or weak water pump impellars. water pump is a fan that moves water instead of the air. if the blades wear, they still kinda work, but at idle they work poorly because the broken blades only move a little air at low speed, rev the engine up, they spin faster and work better. If the fan is functioning OK (Turns on and off by itself) and car still runs warmer at idle than at rev, water pump may be worth investigation.
Check the Fan switch at the bottom of the radiator, if you disconnect it and have a power feed to the switch then it isn't a fuse.Bridge the terminals and if the fan comes on then the fault is probably the switch.
are the upper and lower radiator hoses hot when car overheats? if so check for a clogged radiator or weak water pump. if one hose is hot and the other is cold or much cooler then replace the thermostat.

CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE HEATER HOSES AROUND ENGINE BLOCK TO THE HEATER CORE HOSES. THERE IS A REASON CAR OVERHEAT.IF CAR OVERHEAT WHILE DRIVING YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMOSTAT OR LEAKING OUT COOLANT OR BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF ENGINE OVER HEAT WHILE SITTING DURING A LONG IDLING PERIOD.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULTY COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.HOT WIRE COOLANT TO SEE IF IT RUNS IF NO REPLACE FAN MOTOR. IF YES FAN MOTOR COULD HAVE FAULTY WIRE OR PCM FAILURE. CHECK ENGINE CRANKCASE IF OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE ENGINE HEAD GASKET LEAKING.
The fan fuse was blown? Well, the only way that will make your engine overheat is if you were sitting still for a long time and it overheated. If you keep the vehicle moving, the air can cool the radiator (without the fan), and it should be fine.
yes the head gaskets leaking on modern aluminum head engines is all to common. never overheat them, if they start to get hot shut it down and find out why, it can of course be the fans and plugged radiators or faulty thermostats but sounds like in your case the head gasket is leaking and combustion gas is entering the cooling system and this causes an overheat
Sounds like either you are low on coolant or the cooling fan isn't working. With engine cool remove radiator cap and check coolant level, top off if necessary. If full start engine and turn on A/C full blast, full cold the cooling fan should come on almost instantly, unless there are two individual cooling fans in which case only one may turn on. If no fans turn on check all fuses whether related to fan or not. If all fuses fine try swapping relays around, they are usually all the same size/style. If fan still doen't work you have either an open positve or ground side of the circuit, Which will require wiring schematics and a multimeter. If coolant full and fan/s turn on and engine still overheats you'll need a new thermostat installed.
