Power steering problems

Serpentine belt slipped off and I lost power steering. Put it back on and still don't have power steering. Any suggestions?

3 bolts should be holes in the pully too go thru with an extension if their are no holes in the pully then you nee a power steering pump pully remover it can be rented for 5.00 at auto zone

SOURCE: belt that runs from crank to cam and power steering pump.

DID you loosen ALL the bolts. One or 2 on the top bracket, and one under pump which is difficult to see and must be felt to loosen.

The squeak is usually the result of a dry bearing. The repair can be quite easy. Make a very quick sketch of the belt and pulley arrangement before you start. Locate the securing nuts on the pulley and whist the belt is still on just loosen them,, do not remove. (leaving the belt on can help the pulley resist movement whilst you undo the securing bolts). Locate the tensioner idler pulley and using a suitable sized socket or spanner on the central bolt, rotate the pulley against the direction of tension to allow the belt. to be slipped off. Now return to the squeaking pulley and remove the bolts completely. Lubricate the pulley shaft and bearing with WD40 spray. Often this enough to return the pulley to years of silent running. To complete, reverse the steps above

Power steering problem


Sounds like the pump pressure valve is not working when cold and should be replaced.> It is inside the pump where the pressure line connects to the pump.

I have a squealing coming from under my hood when i press the gas pedal and gets louder when I turn. I checked the engine and I do have a loose belt but I don't know what it could or couldn't be.


The power steering belt tensioner may be out of adjustment and the belt slips more under the extra load when you turn. Apparently you don't have one of the serpentine belts with a spring tensioner; when these fail the belt usually comes off very quickly. Examine the belt carefully - if the sides of the belt are shiny-slick from all of the slipping, replace the belt.

It's also a good idea to check the power steering fluid. This isn't something to ignore; a sudden or erratic change in steering wheel force in an emergency situation could be catastrophic.

this is for a system with a/c. If you don't have a/c let me know and I will get you the correct one but i'm sure that you have a/c and power steering.

The power steering pump should have a couple of retainer bolts, and then one adjuster bolt. Loosen the two retainer bolts slightly, then adjust the pulley back out of the way, slip the belt on, and use the power steering pump to tension the system.

I forgot to mention during our chat that to remove the serpentine belt, all you have to do is pull the tensioner back. The tensioner has a square hole in it. Use a 1/2" breaker bar and stick it into the hole and pull the tensioner back to release the tension while you slip the belt off of one of the pullies. You don't have to take the belt off of all of them...Just so you get it off of the power steering pump pully.

Can I drive a 2003 saturn L200 without serpentine belt?


As crazy as it sounds, I don't see why not. Based on my limited knowledge of a 2002 L200, the power steering is run off the back of the camshaft and the water pump is driven by the timing belt. The only things the serpentine belt runs are the A/C and alternator. Obviously you won't make it very far running without an alternator, but at worst you kill your battery. Serpentine belt on a 2.2l 4 cylinder 2002 L200 has nothing to do with the water pump or power steering pump.

Steering hard /loosing pwer at 40-55mph


Take the car in for a new serpentine belt and tensioner right away before you destroy the engine. The alternator, power steering pump and waterpump are not turning right now because the belt has come off. The battery will die soon because it is not charging, and the engine will overheat and perform it's own little rendition of the china syndrome. When the red warning lights in the dash come on, it generally means; park it unless you're being shot at.
