Question about 1999 Saturn SL

Sl2 stalls while driving or when starting.

About 18-24 months ago, my saturn sl2 1999 wouldn't start. about 110,000 miles i think(i'm at 148 now) radio and clock lost set time/stations, but all other electrical working. it would try to turn over with no luck. another day/time and it would start right up. no saturn dealer nearby. all garages said they thought it was fuel pump but only one would work on it. so got new fuel pump/filter and it worked about 6 mths. happened again. garage says pump failed and they replaced it. happened again and they said pump bad and filter full. replaced.they told me come back about every 4-6 mths for new filter which i think sounds incorrect. i drove today about 75 miles highway, then car stalled as i drove side streets. anytime car stalls, radio and clock setting go out. they're lit up, but time goes to 1:00 and stations get lost. one time when it went out while driving it's like a convulsion til i can get it over to side. the car has been awesome except for this one problem. battery is good, but i admit i haven't checked water cells lately. did it when battery was new. we checked fuses/circuits inside car. do not get check engine light. help please! i'm a single mother and i think they see me coming!! thanks.

    I WILL find a new place and give them this info to try. you get five stars for your quick info. since the mechanic never recharged me for the 2 addl pumps, only the labor and blamed it on maybe faulty parts- he was kinda shaking his head and trying to figure things out i thought - and said he would look to see if he could find anything else when i almost brought it in last week for a new fuel filter, do you think he's worth another try with your info? i always thought the electrical made it not right, not logical to be what they said. but what do i know? thanks so much! and have a great day!

Wow... if the whole car is doing that i would guess it to be electrical a bad ground...basically a major cable that connects to your frame or directly to the negative side of the battery. You see, electricity leaves its source makes a device operate then the electricity goes back to the source. kinda like a big circle... when you start your car...the battery gets you going...then...the Alternator takes over...recharges the battery while making your car operate on an electrical standpoint. if you break that circle...lights it the wires losing contact. battery failure( usually they STAY dead) or it could be an alternator with an intermittent problem. Based on a money stand point...your battery is fine...i'd replace the alternator...not trusting it after all that. (100- 300 bucks) if it STILL does it..then have a mechanic replace your wiring harness associated with the ignition, starter,alternator and battery( should be just one bundle of wires to fit that portion) .200 to 400 bucks to get that replaced. i hope this helps you out with finding out what the problem is...and i'm sorry to say...getting a fuel filter and fuel pump replacement would not cause a radio to lose power...the battery is like a back up system. don't go back to that mechanic ever he is ripping you off. im an electrician so i know about electricity and i also tinker with cars quite a bit for fun.

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units I suspect corroded wire connectors

Blue smoke is usually bad rings. But in the meantime, try changing your oil, see if that helps.

My 1999 saturn SL2 i in stalled a new rebult stater motor about maybe one year ago , now the last 3 months about it's been a hit and miss on starting most of the time it starts then every so often

it might not be the starter it could just be a relay i would check the relay and if it is just clicking when you try to start it then that is probubly it if not maybe you have a bad batery

I don't know about the boots, but my 93 Saturn SL2 was doing the same thing and I found out it was the clutch.

Help! I have 98 Saturn SL2 that was live one minute dead the next

Sounds exactly like my 1999 SL2 which had "burning and arching" in the fuse box. Car one day be fine the next I'd take it to the store, come back in 10 minutes and wouldn't start, no radio, no power windows, no keyless entry remote, no rear defrost and even locking doors from inside power buttons it sounded odd. This fixed the problem by replacing the fuse box.

Just bought a 98 Saturn SL2 that is in excellent shape but high miles, mostly highway miles. It has 210,000 miles on it but was well taken care of and sounds and drives great. Had a new transmission put in...

yea it sounds like someone like most wanna be mechanics take a torques screwdriver and run the idle screw up on the throttle body instead of fixzing the real problem also you may want to concider testing and changeing the TPS

This is a fuel related problem.

Replace the fuel pump.

Excessive oil use

the time it takes to use one quart is not the figure I need, how many miles does three weeks represent? 1000 miles per quart is ok, less and you will need new rings in most cases, which of course means an engine overhaul.
