Tehre are screws missing as well. The spring is what is holds the locking mechanism in the open position. This is sold as a unit, so I doubt you will be able to find a diagram that goes that granular. If I remember this setup right, youo should see a place the spring fits into, and it then pushes against the backing place (part that extends downward to puch against). Hope that helps..
This is more than likely because of a small pin that has fell out of the tracking device that allows the ashtray to spring open and then stay closed when you push it again.
Take a small ridge plastic tool to wedge the wood like trim off from around the stereo, and air conditioner controls. There are 6 clips, 3 on each side. Don't disconnect anything. It not necessary. Two small screws hold the ashtray in place remove these and remove the ashtray from the dash. Look down inside the inner console to see if you can find the small pin that is missing. Good luck with that. I couldn't find mine. Examine the open/close mechanism and see if you can find some that will work lying around the house. I had to make mine. I used a small stainless steel Allen bolt. Cut it to length, filed it down so the point would track through the open/close maze, gave it test run, hot glued into place, and reinstalled. Works like a champ.
Oh oh and just in case you are wondering, Ford doesn't make parts for parts.
It sounds like the spring mechanism on the tray is either bent or broken. You can try removing the tray and bending the spring steel to increase the friction or you may have to purchase new or used ash trays.
Bertha: most ashtrays are made to pull most of the way out, then take a flat blade screwdriver and push down on a flexible piece in the middle. If you can't figure it out and it is important, go to a wrecking yard and tear one out. It won't matter if you screw it up!
i started by removing ashtray and the screw underneath. it would be easier to remove rear seat as access is not so good to move around. wind window down, then carefully pull from top of trim, it should come away fairly easy. the trim is held on by push in clips but you need to careful as they break easy. behind the inside door handle is a plastic backing plate which i found easier to remove first. now the outside handle can be undone and i simply pulled the cable and the door opened. the cable was broken where it joins the handle so a new cable is needed.
Both four way and directional flasher are usually on the fuse block. Sometimes the directional flasher is separate and up under the edge of the dash. To locate the 4way, turn it on and find the item thats clicking. The directional flasher looks identical but won't be clicking.
If they have not changed the design, the retaining spring is part of the "extinguishing bar" (where you put cigarettes out) the clip tends to lock in the down position and needs to simply be pushed back up to engage the retainer in the dashboard opening
lower settings as far as speeds for your blower motor go through a resister block to reduce the voltage your blower motor receives to make it turn slower. If it turns slow on high you would have to check the voltage at the blower motor, should be the same voltage that would be at the battery. There could also be material in the blower motor fan like things a mouse could have put there. Causes the fan to spin slower and also blocks the fins from pushing air. Any strange noises would be heard unless you have had the prob since you owned it and could not detect any changes. It could be even full of stuff and still be in balance. but it could be a few other things.
