Sounds like a good start. I should have mentioned that it only happens when I step into it hard. Would this also cause it to die occasionally? That happened to my wife. It restarted and ran fine after.

WE HAVE A 2002 DODGE 2500 DIESEL AND IT LUNGES AT LOW SPEEDS. IT THROWS NO CODES WHAT IS IT

My 2001 was doing this...would also cut out randomly mid-acceleration and return to idle. Very fun when trying to get up to freeway speed! Turned out to be an accelerator pedal position sensor. Also threw no codes! Was approx a $500 (part+labor) about 4 years ago.

sounds like your transmission. if the fluid is red or in your case, a really dark red almost brown, then it is your transmission. you might be able to catch it in time to have the leak fixed and save the transmission.
