96 ford windstar when i put water in the radiator it comes directly out the oil pan plug i just replaced the head gaskets the heads are sitting flush and are torqued to specs

My statement would be, either one of the head gaskets is not on correctly, or you have a large crack in one of the heads, or the block.
Did you have the heads checked for cracks when you had them off the engine ? Was either gasket blown ?
There has to be a gap between a water jacket and an oil jacket for the coolant to enter the crankcase.

SOURCE: Head bolt torque specs needed for 96 tbird 3.8

Head bolts are torque to yeild so you MUST use new bolts.
Tighten cylinder head retaining bolts in numerical sequence in three steps as follows:

  1. 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  1. 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  1. 50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
Loosen retaining bolts one at a time two to three revolutions and retighten as follows:

Long bolts:
  • Tighten to 40-50 Nm (30-37 lb-ft).
  • Rotate an additional 175-185 degrees.
  • Go to next bolt in sequence.
Short Bolts:
  • Tighten to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).
  • Rotate an additional 175-185 degrees.
  • Go to next bolt in sequence.

Was the oil changed? Has the low pressure been verified with a mechanical test gauge at the oil pressure sending unit pressure port? Do that 1st before assuming the pressure is low.

Left Side

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Exhaust manifold Alternator Water crossover Intake manifold Valve cover Timing cover Secondary camshaft drive chain Power steering return hose retaining bolt from the cylinder head 3 M6 external drive bolts from the front portion of the cylinder head 10 M11 internal drive cylinder head bolts Cylinder head and gasket.
  5. Clean the head mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Lubricate the bolts with engine oil prior to installation.
  2. Torque the M11 bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), plus an additional 70 degrees
    2. Step 2: Turn an additional 60 degrees
    3. Step 3: Turn an additional 60 degrees (total 190 degrees)

  3. Torque the M6 bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  4. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering return hose retaining bolt to the cylinder head and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) Secondary camshaft drive chain Timing cover Valve cover Intake manifold Water crossover Exhaust manifold Negative battery cable
  5. Change the oil and filter.
  6. Fill the cooling system.

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.

  5. Clean the head mating surfaces.

(25 Nm) Nut attaching the coil cassette ground wire to the cylinder head and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm) Secondary camshaft drive chain Timing cover Valve cover Intake manifold Water crossover Exhaust manifold Negative battery cable
  5. Change the oil and filter.

Many possibilities, first check water/coolant level, check for leaks after running engine for about 10 mins, or sitting overnight, then check radiator air flow is not restricted, and fins are in reasonable order, check fan, make sure it cuts in before engine gets to hot, check if there is water in the oil (looks creamy) or oil in the water, if so you need a head gasket and/or a new head. flush engine block with high pressure water in reverse flow direction, then check thermostat, use thermometer, put in a pot of water temp, is stamped on body of thermostat, if not, bring to boil, should open well before boiling point, replace if needed, check water pump fins are not worn away. get specialist to use lazer temp gauge.

Has the radiator been checked for rust? bet it is red with rust right now from a leaking engine cylinder head gasket, very common in this van. Remove the radiator and have it professionally cleaned and replace the thermostat and flush the engine block and put a can of head gasket sealer in the system on refill with clean new coolant mixed 50/50 with low alkaline water like drinking water from the store..

My car either has a cracked block, needs head gasket or? When I put water in the radiator, it comes out the oil pan without starting the engine.


I think a cracked block would be very unlikely. More than likely to be a head gasket problem. A decent mechanic shouldn't have any trouble pressure testing each cylinder to diagnose the fault. I'm assuming it's a V8? there are other possible causes also. Cracked head, faulty inlet manifold (v8, if it has water jackets in the manifold). I would have it checked out before assuming it needs a motor.

I got oil in radiator . We have put recone head and new head gasket new head bolt new radiator still getting oil in cooling system


Hi Sidu, Have you torqued the head correctly? Did you flush out the cooling system by back flushing. The radiator is one part of the system and if the oil had gotten into the water jackets it may still be there? Get yourself some engine flushing agent and put that into the radiator, follow the instructions. Afterwards disconnect the rad hoses and get a hose pipe put it into the engine side of the connection and back flush untill the water coming out is clean. If the vehicle is a diesel engine it may be fitted with an oil cooler, (usually on the side of the block behind an alloy cover. It could be that there is a leakage in the seals and that would cause a leakage! Regards Johngee10

I have a 1992 cadillac seville 4.9L i bought it knowing the head gasked was bad. was gonna use thermagasket try fix this problem. But have a pos bigger problem when I drained the oil it was full of water...


it could have a problem behind the water pump/ timing cover. bu *** could be head gaskets. DO NOT put anything to try to fix this, it will not work and cause more damage. but your engine is already damaged.

I have a 1990 Ford Festiva that has oil in the coolant. There is no water in the oil and the car runs fine. We replaced the head gasket and the radiator and it still gets oil in the radiator.


it is very hard to get all residue out of coolant, try to flush with water and fill with water and dish liquid about 1/4 cup, run at high idle approx 1500rpm for 20-30mins, and then flush out and try that, if head gaskets and rad was done properly there is no reason for oil in coolant except for left over oil

problem could be heads bolts . i put new bolts in put a little sealer on them . make sure your bolt holes is clean free from debris. put a lillte sealer on intake gasket on top and bottom where coolants travel. if all was done . drain engine oil in clean container .set it aside. take radiator cap off .you a coolant pressure rise kit .put a pan under oil pan with drain plug still off .pressure your radiator about 10 psi. make sure you have antifreeze in radiator and engine . when you pressure up to 10 psi look under the car if coolant comes out oil pan. you got leaking head gasket. if not .put oil pan plug back on . put oil back in car . check your freeze plugs also.
