Question about 1988 Ford F 150

1 Answer

I have a 1988 Ford F150 that won't start. If you remove and reinstall the computer it will start until it is shut off then won't restart? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Truck had been running fine and passed emisions a few weeks prior to this . Also, not getting any spark or power to the fuel pump. Thanks alot!!!

Thank you for the reply. I called ford and they said they didn't make the computer for that truck anymore. Is there any other computers that could be compatible? Mine is E8TF-12A650-J2A Thanks again

Wow I've never heard of anyone clearing hard faults that way (disconnecting cpu) next time just lift the positive batt terminal for a few minutes

beg or borrow a code reader and see what the hard fault is any good public library has a set of chiltons books to look up codes

the no spark or fuel pump are just normal ways of cpu shutting the truck down on a hard fault

sounds like a computer problem, it is rare but this sounds like what u have wrong, they cost around $150 rebuilt so guessing is not really a good idea, have the dealer do a 1 hour doagnostic to be sure.

99 ford f150 4.2 started fine after getting at running temp. shuts off very hard to restart has code 320 changed crank sensor cam sensor no spark

The wiring harness which leads to the crankshaft sensor can rub on the A/C hose on the passenger side. When you restart the engine, it will shake and Torque the engine to the Drivers side until the RPM stabilizes. This will break contact with the bare wire until the wire settles back into position, ready to repeat the cycle. I imagine road bumps can have the same wire flopping around to cause intermittent failures again.

Try putting some electrical tape on the feed wire and then plastic tie the wire to give you clearance.

1987 Ford f150 shuts off and wont start until engine is cooled off

To clarify, you said it runs for 20 min then quits, and it won't start again until it cools off. Have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure right after it quits running ?
These models have an ignition module attached to the side of the distributor that has a history of failing when hot. The coil and the pickup inside the distributor can fail too. Could also be a relay.

1987 ford f150 shut off and will not turn over to start

If it cranks but won't start, you will need to figure out if you are dealing with a spark or fuel problem to proceed.
Check those things and let me know what you find.

Drive 1988 ford f150 on the highway it dies and won,t start back. It acts like it is out of gas. Let it set 30 mins. and it starts right up

Fuel Pump-a possible. The time frame of 30 minutes will vary.
The armature on the pump motor is worn, as well as the tiny bearing,so it seizes or just stops conducting current.
Drop fuel tank and replace. May be able to remove all bed bolts but rear ones, and tip bed up.

I have a 1988 ford f150 with a 5.0 not getting power to eather fuel pump. replaced relay. bench tested both pumps an they test good. truck will fire and run with starting fluid then dies like it will...

replace the oil sending switch on the motor. upon starting the engine this switch has a 3rd wire connected to the fuel pump
when oil pressure is running at its normarl psi the computer will shut that circuit off and then turn on the fuel pump relay
