Question about Cars & Trucks
It's backfiring and like white smoke coming out of tailpipe
White smoke indicates coolant leak in the engine. Could just be your head gasket.

This is caused when oil gets passed the rings n the pistons. Its due to wear and tear or old motor needs rebuilt. now you can put a bottle of motor honey in it. or some of that smoke be gone you find in wal-mart auto section of store this will greatly reduce your white smoke till you can get it rebuilt .

SOURCE: my truck blows white smoke
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).

SOURCE: smoke and water from tailpipe
That white color is a tell tale sign of a bad head gasket, when the head gasket goes your coolant mixes with your oil and the burns off causing the white smoke. I hate to give bad news but it's not cheap or easy to replace.
Hope this helps

Sounds as if you are running extremely lean.Has EGR been bypassed maybe?
What is fuel pressure,on that vehicle the fuel pressure regulator may be adjustable. Some of these had an allen screw inside the vacuum port where you could richen the mixture some. Also try backing down on the timing a few degrees.

SOURCE: white smoke but no leaks
when the engine is cool start the engine squeeze a radiator hose if it is a safe place, rev the motor if the hose starts to get hard the head gasket or head has a very small leak. It will take a long time for the anti-freeze to burn trough the exhaust and there mayl not being external leaks
