Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

My fuel gauge does not work no matter what amount of fuel. I have had the fuel pump/sending unit replaced to no avail. I did notice however when this was beng changed that when thetank was on the floor, and the wiring harness was attatched that the gauge moved to about 1/4 which was about the amont of fuel in it. When the tank was put back into place however the gauge went back to a whisker above the empty mark. This is where it was when I took it to be repaired. The mechanic removed the tank again and din a manual test where he physically moved the float up and down, and the gauge responded. He said he did not understand it, and put it back together, and it still did not work.

MY PROBLEM WAS..1991 DODGE DAKOTA -318
a FEW WEEKS AGO THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN WENT OUT. EVER SINCE THIS HAPPENED THE TRUCK HAS BBEN ACTING UP.
TRUCK RUNS VERY ROUGH. RPM'S ARE NOT CONSITENT AT ANY TIME. DOES NOT SHIFT PROPERLY. IT IS EITHER A VERY ROUGH SHIFT OR NO SHIFT AT ALL. WHEN IT DOES NOT SHIFT I INCREASE THE RPM'S BRIEFLY, AND THEN LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS, AND THEN IT SHIFTS. ALSO SINCE THIS STARTED IT HAS BEEN USING A LOT MORE FUEL

1997 Z71 5.7, cranks but wont start, spray a little either into the air duct and starts up and runs fine. Did notice when driving the fuel gauge spins around 360 degrees.

i would check the fuel pressure regulator. sounds like it doesn't regulate the proper amount of fuel without you having to spray the either. also, your gage could have a short it , i would check the wiring to it.

Gas gauge always reads full.

Hello John.
The Montana/Venture vans have a problem with the fuel gauge sending units in the early 2000's.
The only cure is to drop the fuel tank, remove the sending unit and replace it.
The fuel gauge sending unit is available separately from the fuel pump.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Fuel gage not working. Only a smsll light seen. Does the fuel pump need changing?

As long as the car is running fine it's safe to say the fuel pump does not need to be replaced. However the fuel tank sending unit may need to be replaced assuming the fuel gauge itself isn't at fault. First check your owners manual if available for your fuse block info and check fuses then I'd look into the sending unit. Let me know if you need help with that

HI, MY FUEL GAUGE WORKS BUD ERRATIC, I MEAN IT DOESNT SHOW THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF GAS LEFT. WHAT COULD BE WRONG? THANKS.

In a case like this, the culpret is most likely the fuel level sending unit, which is located on the fuel pump in the fuel tank. In most vehicles, the pump and the sending unit all come in one assembly, which means in order to get a correct reading on the gauge, you'll need to replace the fuel pump. And actually, considering the fact that you have to drop the fuel tank and remove the pump anyway, it's just good measure to change them as a set.

I hope this helps! :)

2002 monte carlo fuel gauge doesnt work, pump works ok.

It is likely the fuel level sending unit. I had a customer with an 03 Monte Carlo that the pump went out and the fuel gauge hadn't worked in about a year. We replaced the fuel pump module and it took care of both problems. I believe the sending unit is available separately from the complete module.

Gas guage is not working

If there is gas in the tank and it is not registering correctly, then the sending unit or power to sending unit is bad.

Replaced fuel pump now gas gauge is screwy

The sending unit sends a signal to the engine control module. The engine control module sends a serial message to the fuel gauge.
Check the connection at the fuel tank. If you have a digital multi-meter, check the resistance on the "purple" wire at the fuel tank connector, fuel tank side. The amount of resistance will be determined by the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. Generally it should be between 10 and 255 ohms.
Below is the wiring diagram for your car. Hope it helps, let me know.
Regards.

Gas Gauge or Sending Unit

more than likely it's the gauge it sets in a circuit board and sometimes the contacts get worn and with vibration it voltage spikes it and then it fails. very seldom is it the sending unit in the tank. please rate this...thanks
