I have a knocking in my sering and i think its the stering gear box

There is a technical bulletin in the Chevrolet system for this problem. They have known about it for quite a while. My 2004 1500 Crew Cab had this knocking in the steering linkage from shortly after I bought it new. IMHO it is a design problem, or inferior parts used to build the vehicle. In 2006, while I was still iin warranty, I took it in to have this looked at. At the time the service bulletin said for the techs to just lube the intermediate linkage. Since then they have revised it to replacing the linkage. Call the Chevrolet GM owner center and see if they will give you some "good will" assistance in replacing the parts. Try 800-222-1020, or 866-790-5600.

I also own a 2004 chevy silverado It too makes a sort of clunking or knocking sound when I am steering at low speeds such as sterring on one spot or parking and turning slowly.

My truck is the same year and make but It's not an extended cab It's a reg cab step side. It too knocks while I steer on the spot whithout moving the vehicle. Sometimes when I steer slowly to park the vehicle

All full size 1999-2008 GM trucks & SUVs have or will have this problem. A redesigned Intermediate Steering Shaft was released in 2008. It is the permanent fix. If you are in warranty, squawk to your dealer. If not, the part is easy to replace.

I used the after-market Dorman 425-176 part. It sells for about $50 if you are a good shopper. Instructions are in the box. Only 2 bolts need to be removed.

1) Park your truck straight and level. Set the parking brake.

2) Bungee the steering wheel so it will not turn.

3) Disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes for the air bag system to discharge.

4) Remove the 2 bolts, one in the engine compartment, one under the dash. Wiggle the old part up and out and the new one in.

5) Replace the bolts.

6) Connect the battery, Remove the bungee before driving.

Being a stiff and fat old man, this took me 2 hours with rest breaks. Next time I could do it in 1 hour. Young and slender might finsh the task in 30 minutes.

Good luck.

2004 chevy truck radio control on steering wheel

there could be a broken wire in the steering wheel which would mean possibly having to remove the steering wheel but there will be an air bag that could go off which would be dangerous so its best left to the professionals unless you know exactly what you are doing as regards taking off steering wheels.

My 2001 chevy silverado's low beams don't work. I

The wiring for the low beams would run not to the ignition, but to the dimmer switch. I don't know what color they are, but sounds like you are at the source of the problem, if the low beams quit when the column is let down. Pull the trim pieces off the steering column and examine the wires going to the dimmer switch. You may see some wiring insulation scraped off. It could be a bad dimmer switch, but check the wiring first.
Good luck.

2004 Silverado crew cab has rattle around steering

If you feel this rattle while driving at low speed or turning at low speed it is likely a worn out steering shaft coupler, it is very common.

I feel a knock in the steering when turning and in travel. Is it serious?

No its not serious ! You need to replace the center section on your steering column . Not that expensive and only takes about thirty minutes .

Knocking noise

If the knocking sound is coming from the steering wheel area itself, then I believe it's the nylon bushing in the steering colum. My friend had the same problem with his truck. The other trucks we work on at the shop seem to have this common problem.

If it's sounds like its outside the truck, have the tie rod ends checked out.

Steering gear box knock

Lube your intermediate steering shaft. It is very easy. Remove the bolt in the shaft that you can see from under the hood and push the steering shaft up toward the firewall. Where the shaft goes into itself place some grease and work it back and forth. This will last quite a while, but is easy to do again if need be. Replace the bolt and you should be go to go. The dealer will charge you $150 to do the same job. The knock goes away as soon as you test it out.
