It wont engage if your low on refrigerant you can bypass the low pressure switch located on or near the receiver dryer it has 2 wires plugged into it take a paper clip and bypass the 2 in the boot and it will run long enough to re charge it.

I have a 99chevy lumina 3.1 6cylinder the a.c. is not getting cold last yr worked great it's just blowing hot air


Can you do a quick observation for me and reply - you can probably do it by yourself - sit in the car with the vehicle running - no radio, etc. and leave the ac off. Once it's idled down and running smoothly, turn your ac on to low - low will keep the fan noise down.

When you turn your ac on - do you hear like a single 'click' and does the motor sound as if it's a little more strained than it was before you turned the ac on? Your compressor (I'll attach a pic) has a 'clutch' on the outside of it - when you turn your ac on, that clutch needs to engage - that's the click sound. Your engine will usually sound like it's under a small amount of strain. Which is normal.

When you turn it off - you should hear that same click, maybe not as predominantly - but the engine should feel as if it's no longer under that strain. This will tell me if your ac compressor's clutch is engaging or not.

We can go from there - all the best, hope it's an easy fix - summer's here without a doubt.

Mary - that part on the front, on front of the assembly - that's your clutch for your ac compressor - this is just a reference - if you stand outside the car and watch - when the car is running but your ac is off, the pulley spins - but that piece with the triangle will not spin with it. When you turn the ac on - that piece on front of the pulley 'engages', makes a click sound - and spins also. That's the clutch - and the assembly in the picture is an ac compressor.

The top pic the clutch is engaged - the bottom pic - this assembly is a little different - but these give you an idea of where to look if you can visually observe. Your belt will go around the ac compressor just like the power steering pump, alternator, etc.

AC Clutch noise and vibration


An A/C clutch will not make this concern happen, more likely the A/C compressor is begining to go out. The belt on the A/C clutch Assy. free wheels (spins feree on the pulley) when clutch is not engaged. If concern is not present with A/C off this means the bearings in the puley assy. ok. Once the A/C clutch is engaged it locks the compressor against the spinning pulley and turn the compressor chaft and spins the A/C compressor internal shaft. If you hear a loud "screach" when you turn on the A/C it means the belt slipped for a second, if it continiues to screach it means either the belt is loose or that the compressor is internaly locking up. I wouild start by checking the belt tension (if not equipted with and auto tensioner). You can also remove the belt and turn on the A/C and attempt to turn the clutch/pulley by hand, it should turn with a little effect but should not bind or lock at times if that happens compressor is bad.

You need to have the refrigerant charge level checked, it sounds like it is low. You Need a set of AC pressure gauges to do this testing. If the system has a low charge the pressures will be very low in the low side testing port.

I ust had the water pump replaced. Now my ac has gone out. I know nothing about cars but I do know that I hear a strange noise and the front part of the ac unit was turning and now it's not. It seems...


It is unlikely that the replacement of the water pump and AC failing are related, however ensure that the V belt is correctly positioned and under tension. The AC pulley should be spinning continuously by the V belt. The AC compressor is engaged by an electrically operated clutch within/behind the pulley wheel. If the pulley wheel is not spinning but the belt is sliding over it then you have a seized AC compressor and this will most probably need replacing. If the wheel is spinning but the AC compressor is not working (no cooling) then it is the clutch that is not engaging. This could be due to a worn clutch, failed clutch actuator, broken electrical connection, failed relay, broken fuse a failed interior thermostat (the car thinks that the 'set' temperature has been reached and so switches the AC off). To check, put the AC on the lowest setting and test the voltage at the AC compressor connection. If voltage is being supplied it is likely to be a failed AC clutch. There are lots of AC clutch repair videos on youtube and these should be a great help.

You may be having AC problems but that is not what happened when the Steering locked unless the AC is on the same belt as the Power steering unit. That whining you are hearing when you turn is actually the power steering unit being low on fluid or the power steering pump going out. Based on what you have described my guess is that the unit has gone out and needs to be replaced. As far as the AC compressor is concerned, if the unit is low on Freon it will not engage once it gets too low unless the clutch goes out. When you look at the center of the AC compressor when the engine is running and the AC is off you should see the pulley free spinning and the very center of the pulley won't be spinning, that is the clutch Dis-engaged. When you turn the AC on the Clutch should engage and allow the compressor to work. You will hear it kick in and kick out repeatedly if it is low on Freon. If it is too low it will never kick in because the low pressure switch won't allow it.

How can you tell if your ac compressor is not engaging


Look at the compressor pump when it is stopped, in front of the puley is a clutch like affair, start the car and look to see if this clutch is spinning if it is your compresor is engaging. Also most times you will hear a change in engine sound when thecompressor engages

Car overheating and ac is hot and have 0645 code


There is an electrically driven clutch on the front of the air conditioning compressor which engages when air conditioning is required The AC compressor has a fan belt driven wheel on the front of it. The belt turns this wheel all the time. When the a/c is off this wheel spins freely. When a/c is required the electrically driven clutch engages this spinning wheel to supply drive to the a/c compressor shaft. The 0645 code concerns a fault with this clutch.

AC blowinghot air


Locate wires coming from compressor clutch and trace to nearest plug that you can unplug. Turn on A/C to max cooling. If clutch not engaged (center of compressor drive pulley not spinning with pulley), unplug compressor clutch wires and use multimeter to check voltage going to compressor clutch. If voltage is around 12 volts or more, then clutch should be engaged when plugged in. Plug clutch wires back in (with motor still running and ac set to max). If clutch still not engaged, then clutch definitely bad because 12V signal should engage it.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air


I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Screeching noise, then a/c stops blowing cold air. Still blows air, just not cold air.


it could be the air conditioning clutch going out. to check turn your car on and idle it with ac on and hood open. at the ac compressor it will have a pulley on it with a clutch that engages when the air conditioning is on. if it engages and disengages it can be the clutch itself has gone bad, the ac clutch will also disengage if there is not enough freon in the ac system, will also engage and disengage if the pressure gets too high in the ac system. Depending on the year of the vehicle it will disengage at full throttle and come back on when you are not at full throttle.
If it is a metallic sounding screech for example take a coke can and drag it across pavement kind of sound it could be a bad compressor or a bad ac clutch. If it is a more rubbery sound for example a car spinning its tires kind of noise it could be a loose belt.

1. Check to make sure all belts are tight under hood
2. start car and look at ac compressor to make sure compressor pulley is turning and that the fan clutch is engaged spinning
