If you had somebody do it, I would take it back and tell them what it's doing. I'm not sure about vw's, but if that is equipped with a hydraulic clutch, it could be low on fluid, or something wrong with the slave valve.

Im thinking about buying a 1997 vw golf gl, guys says he's replaced the clutch once and still has problems, also he says the car wont start without fixing the clutch first. could it also be an el

I have no idea why your even asking any questions
about that VW

Replaced the clutch & still has problems---so you want to
buy someone elses problems?

Car won't start-- so you can part with your money & get
a car that you can't even start?

Could be electrical or something?

Your going off what the owner said---Ya & why is he
selling it--because he can't afford to or figure out how to
keep it going?

I know money may be an issue but you don't buy a 16 year
old car regardless of condition ,not even if it was free ,I wouldn't
take it.

Do you know anything about VW's or have a college degree

OK so I own a 95 VW Golf 2.0 manual trans. Once in a great while it severely jerks when I accelerate or maintain a constant speed. If I give the car A LOT of gas it doesnt do it, but will continue when I...

This can be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS). It will normally be found on the end of the throttle shaft oposite the cable connection. They are fairly simple to replace, and cost less than $50.

1998 VW Golf with a manual transmission. It is popping out of reverse and also, while shifting through the gears it is really hesitant to get going in each gear. Seems to be most noticable in first gear...

I had the same problem when I bought my GTI a few years back. It turned out that the reverse gear was shot which resulted in a new transmission. It kinda sounds like you may be in the same boat.
