Temp gauge going to red and then back down to normal, strong burning scent, any ideas?

Has brand new radiator replaced 2 months ago.

Is the radiator full of coolant, and no air pockets in the system ?

When a temp gauge spikes it usually is not a real heating problem, but possibly a sending unit, or wiring to sender problem. Most especially with the diesel and its vibration. Difficult to say from way over here, but I would rather believe that there may be a bare spot on the wire which occasionaly touches ground.

Hello Ranger Joe, eight months and two radiators is very uncommon. Question, Have you visually confirmed the leak in the radiators or is the leak near the hose connections? Replacing the radiator, cap, water pump, & the thermostat leaves only two others, the hoses and the engine block/heads. Far fitched will be something or somebody poking holes in the radiator.

It sounds like you have air in the Cooling system and the bars leak permanent seal does not help. The sealer creates restrictions through out the water jackets and can cause the thermostat to stick. Replace the radiator cap and run the truck with the radiator cap on the first click and keep an eye on the over flow tank, refill the over flow as needed and make sure you have the heater on the highest setting to work out all the air in the system. Once all the air has worked it's way out of the system, then you can close the radiator cap to the second click to ensure full pressure is built up in your cooling system. first i would purchase a new radiator cap 15 lbs 16 lb capacity cost about $7..then you must let car cool completely...now check radiator coolant level.. top off if it needs it. Now install new cap..let car warm up normally and after it get to normal temp range or higher put hand on upper radiator hose..it should feel hot and when you squeeze it you should feel a slight back pressure..this will mean that the thermostat and water pump are working correctly. if not either the thermostat you purchased is defective or your pump may not be working properly.
when you use just water in an engine the boiling point becomes 212 when you add the correct amount of antifreeze, depending on where you live, the boiling point will go up to 240 degrees. Make sure you put in the correct amount of mix.50/50 will usually work well. sometimes when a gauge does max out like that it could just be trapped air. if after you checked all this out and no air is trapped in the system, i would think that you may have a bad temp sensor. let me know if this helped thanks.

More than likely sounds like your heater core is bad or clogged, easy thing to do is have it backed flushed, also you may need to burp you cooling system it may have a air pocket due to the radiator change

If you have a viscous fan hub then have it replaced as it is not drawing air through the radiator at idle or slow speed (crawling traffic). Check that are no air locks in the system as they will cause heating problems.

fans came late on those car,like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block,and coolant has hard time to pass through,and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high,even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

2000 Chevy Impala - Temperature gauge goes into the red quickly. I had cooling fan assembly replaced 2 months ago because car temperature gauge used to go into the red and sometimes stall.


yea they are right right undo the hoses from the coolant container to to the radiator and the hose from the radiator to the engine and let it all drain out then put it back on and put some new radiator fluid in the radiator until ist full and then put some more in the container for extra make sure to put both hoses back on

Temp gauge goes up to hot then back down only a few times


This is a sign that the thermostat is sticking shut and then opening after the temp gets past a certain point. If the heat gauge goes to high and then drops down suddenly, this is the likely culprit and you need to replace the thermostat - again.

I have had them arrive from the parts store and be defective.

My 2004 Montana had a rad leak and its now fixed . That was approx a month ago . The temp gauge runs steady all the time but when I slow down the temp from the heater drops , and when I speed up again it...


Cooling problems can be hard to pin down.

Do you know if your electric engine fan comes on? If not they should, if you had the radiator fixed how was it done, new, rebuilt, or some fix a leak in a can? Driving an over heating car will ruin it, while the car is off and has sat long enough for the engine to cool, remove the radiator cap and check the fluid, do you have enough?

If the radiator was removed and replaced something may have worked it's way loose as in a wiring harness that runs the fans, most fans have a plastic safety pin of sorts that keep the fan harness from unplugging.

Another problem may be your water pump, since it's taken a month for you to notice any problem with the car I would not think it needs to be bled. Tho it might need to be.

Take the car to your local garage and have them look at it, if you dont do anything your cars engine can become damaged.

It may actually be a coolant temp sensor problem - they do have issues sometimes. I'd replace that before anything else - they're generally inexpensive (in the $20 or less range). If, when you ask for a new one, they ask you which one you want, you need the one for the dash gauge. Some cars have one for the gauge and one for the car's ECU. Your problem is with the one that drives the gauge, so get that one.
