How to repair a cold start issue?

Engine is turning over on the cold start but not catching. Takes 3-5 tries and the whole time it seems to not want to take fuel and has low rpms. Once it is warmed up, it drives great. Suggestions?

Yes. Spark plugs. Try holding down the gas pedal just half way the next time you try to start. If it starts right up it's because the spark is not strong enough to ignite the air fuel mixture. If you add more air (opening the throttle with the gas pedal) you lean out the mixture and it ignites easier. Capiche? As a second solution, your coolant temperature switch is bad. It lives in the radiator. If it's bad it may be telling the computer that the car is already warmed up so the fuel mixture that the computer is commanding into the throttle is too lean. Note: there are two coolant temperature switches on these subaru's. One is for the dash cool or hot for the gauge on the dash. The other (which is the one you want) is for the computer. The part store should ask which one you want. Cheers, Ethan

SOURCE: Cold Start Idle Issue

Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.

SOURCE: most of the time it is difficult to start cold,

It is very p0ossible that the fuel system is a little clogged. It happens to all cars eventually especially if you use the cheaper fuels like supermarkets etc.

Anyway, you can try a decent Injector Cleaner and even change the oil but again use a decent Engine Flush. The stuff I use on my own and friends motors is Injection-Correction.co.uk. You can buy it online and it works a treat. Same stuff the prestige garages use...

Usually a dose of this stuff will give the fuel system a good clear out and make it alot easier to start when cold. Starting issues are usueally fuel related or electrical but by the sound of yours it is purely fuel related. Try it out and reap thebenefits.....

1992 nissan sentra engine turns hard to start when cold it has spark takes a while to start after it starts i turn it off try again it starts every time

I recently came across a Sentra that had a blown head gasket. A head gasket can blow in a number of ways, this one was blown between number 2 and 3 cylinder, as well as between 3 and 4 cylinder, across the combustion chambers.
One would expect the car to at least misfire, but this one didn't, it ran like a clock, only had power loss and hard starting when cold.
Just try to have a compression test taken at your local service station and see what gives.
The only other suggestion I have is that your fuel pump may be dicey. The logic is that when cold, the car had stood for a while and fuel had run back from the carb through the pump valves and it takes some time for the pump to push it back to the carb. When it eventually does, the engine will start and when you switch it off and start again, the fuel is there and the engine kicks over immediately since the fuel did not have time to run back.
Someone else have a handle on this one?

Trouble starting, engine won't catch

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too
