Can't find cylinder head torques!!! please advice....


Torque sequence: ----------------- there are two rows of fasteners and you need to start with the middle 2 fasteners first and then work your way toward the front and back in steps. Step 1: torque head bolts #1,2,3,4,5,6,7, & 9 in sequence to 10 Ft/Lbs Step 2: torque head bolts #1,2,3,4,5,6,7, & 9 in sequence to 20 Ft/Lbs Step 3: torque head bolts #1,2,3,4,5,6,7, & 9 in sequence to 29 Ft/Lbs Step 4: turn all head bolts in sequence an additional 90 degrees Step 5: turn all head bolts in sequence an additional 90-degrees recheck final torque in sequence. Fasteners are supposed to be replaced if they are removed since they are torque-to-yeild fasteners.

Since you didn't say which engine you have, I've pulled torque specs for 3 different engines. Also, since I can't include a diagram showing the relative locations of the numbered head-bolt locations, it would be a good idea for you to purchase a vehicle specific repair guide that will show this info.


Take particular note about the TTY (Torque to Yield) bolts used on 2 of the 3 engines shown. It is said that new head bolts MUST BE USED when head is replaced or re-installed to obtain the proper torque.



B2500 4 Cylinder

Torque sequence: --------- ' 10 6 2 4 8 ' front ' ' ' 7 3 1 5 9 ' -----------Step 1: torque in sequence to 51 Ft/Lbs Step 2: torque again in sequence to 51 Ft/Lbs Step 3: final tighten all bolts an additional 90 to 100 degrees recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that permanently stretch during the initial installation.   1. Install the new cylinder head gasket with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
  2. Install the cylinder head.
  3. Install NEW cylinder head bolts. Torque the bolts in sequence, as follows:
    1. Step 1: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Plus 120 degree turn.
To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket.
  2. Apply thread sealer to the head bolts.

1.8 liter..NOTE: Lubricate the cylinder head bolts using the specified engine oil.

Install the cylinder head bolts. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in 2 or 3 steps in the sequence shown to 76-81 Nm (56-60 lb-ft).

Apply a light coating of engine oil to the threads of the new cylinder head bolts. Install the new cylinder head bolts to the cylinder head. Following the sequence shown below, tighten the cylinder head bolts to 40-60 Nm (30-44 lb-ft). Loosen all cylinder head bolts approximately two turns, then retighten the cylinder head bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) following the sequence shown. After tightening, turn all bolts 90 degrees, in the same sequence. Complete bolt tightening by turning them an additional 90 degrees, in the same sequence. 398246b.gif

  1. CAUTION: Always install new cylinder head bolts. NOTE: Lubricate the cylinder head bolts with Super Premium 5W 30 SAE X0-5W 30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G prior to installation. Install the cylinder head assembly and tighten the cylinder head bolts in the following sequence.
  1. Tighten all bolts in a single sequence to 50 Nm
  2. Back the bolts off 1/2 turn.
  3. Tighten the bolts in sequence shown to 50 Nm .
  4. Rotate all the bolts in a single sequence an additional 180 degrees in two steps of 90 degrees each.
