Could it be possible the coolant lines are reversed not allowing the trans fluid to reach the cooler? The pressure line from the trans pump can easily be identified by taking it loose and directing the fluid into a container.

Hey Mighty Pyro, When you go to install the torque converter do you tilt the transmission to let gravity do some of your work for you and make absolutely sure the drive tangs on the torque converter positively engage with the pump just behind the front cover of the trans? We've had a failure once caused by that. A more experienced mechanic than we were at the time showed me the procedure: gently offer the torque converter onto the input shaft, rotate it counter clockwise till it drops in deeper, THEN keep rotating it until it drops in for the last time, thoroughly engaging with the transmission oil pump drive. I know on certain other transmissions, aligning the oil pump properly in the case is critical and requires special tools.

Check transmission cooler lines for restriction also check transmission cooler also it could be plugged. if all is good.transmission could be overheating because engine overheating or if you towing pulling boat or camper transmission will overheat.

SOURCE: 2001 Dodge grand caravan sport. Transmission

I need a little mor info. But the reason for the being stuck in 2nd gear is because when something goes wrong with the tranny. it goes into "LIMP" mode wich keeps the trans. from shifting out of 2nd when you are going forward. It does sound like your trans. is gone out though.

The transmission has gone bad and all I can say is that you need to replace it.

Good luck.

1991 toyota tercel 1.5 automatic trans. drove to my nephews house and then back home "17 miles round trip" about half mile from home car wont shift first gear to second

Jorge, as richie46 recommended check trans, fluid level. At higher mileages,150,000 the automatic transmission may not shift correctly. This can be caused by the throttle position sensor out of adjustment or a shift solenoid needing to be replaced. Typically the transmission does not need to be completely overhauled.

My 05 taurus is slipping into first gear and slipping into reverse what could it be

You drove a transaxle, knowing it wasn't working correctly

That & not changing the fluid every 3 years-- is a death sentence

The Taurus only averages 85,000 miles, life span

I once owned a trans shop

50% asian transaxle dodge caravans & 50% ford taurus -- was most of my work, at times through out the year

99 Grand Marquis. Wont move in drive but all the other gears work fine. Noticed a large oil spot in my drive way so i added 4 quarts of fluid and still nothing. What could the problem be ?

You don't mention mileage, but a 99 model, plus no forward gear plus evidence of a large leak = don't add fluid until you have located leak.

Sorry to inform you of this, but chances are if you have a large trans fluid leak AND no forward gear, your transmission is DOA. You probably unwittingly drove it without enough fluid for many miles and it overheated fatally. A large leak is a VERY uncommon occurrence unless there has been fluid pan damage, like from hitting a rock or something else on the road, or a fluid cooler line has broken or come loose.

Transmission licking fluid form seal plate.

Well, that doesn't sound good. Probably leaking around the spline which has seals on it. Seal is probably bad. You could look for an additive (Pep Boys?) for transmissions which is supposed to swell seals and maybe stop a leak. This has a low probability of working if the leak is a pint in two weeks.

If this doesn't work sounds like you need to take it to a shop.

Does it do this just in overdrive or drive too? Sounds to me like trans. is on its way out. have you thought about trying a trans. additive might help, your only out the price of the additive.
