Question about 2000 Ford Crown Victoria

1 Answer

2000 Ford Crown Victoria (police pkg) wont start?

About a week ago my check engine light came on after getting a full tune-up(plugs, fuel filter, oil change, new battery & cables ) etc. I noticed that the car started puttering, stalling, and generally having a hard time accelerating up in speed when I press on the gas. I also noticed that once I press the gas pass 50-60 mph the check engine light would start blinking on and off rapidly while pressing the gas then it would stop. Now the car will not start. I've eliminated the starter, alternator, and relays so now Im almost positive its something with the fuel delivery sytem (injectors or fuel pump). Does anyone know what the problem could be?

One more detail I forgot to add is that before this problem started I would also hear a moan/humm like sound coming from the fuel tank.

  • Tyrell Simmons May 26, 2013

It was the starter once i replaced it the problem went away. Thanks for the help :)

I changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, starter, had a oil change, tranny fluid change & my car still sputters when I press on the gas from when I take off. When I go over 50 mph my check engine light starts to blink? Help please :(

The first thing you need to do is have the computer scanned for trouble codes to narrow down the possible causes. But that would require a code reader or scanner.
Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ? Are you getting spark to the plugs ? Because of the moan from the pump, there's a good chance the pump has failed.

Testimonial: "I have checked for codes using my scanner but it's not reading any codes because the check engine light isn't on. It went off a few days before the car stopped cranking. I havnt checked the fuel pressure but its probably just as you said the fuel pump has failed because it tries to start but just wont fire. It just makes a starter/click sound when i turn the ignition. I have been told by a mechanic over the phone that the check engine light was blinking as a sign of missfire. I recently had a tune-up did about a month before the problems started. I changed out spark plugs and fuel filter with and oil change. Maybe there is something wrong with the spark plugs, coils, or injectors? How would I test the coils or plugs? "

Wait a minute. Are you saying the engine clicks but does not crank ?

    Stephen Apr 24, 2013

And is the check engine light coming on when you turn the key switch on ? Anytime the light is on or flashing when the engine is running, there should be trouble codes stored. Even if the engine will now not start.

The codes do not go away until they are cleared by using the scanner.

  • Tyrell Simmons Apr 24, 2013

Yes the check engine light and the battery light is on when I turn the key to the on position. The battery light and check engine lights are the only ones one when I turn the key to on. All the other lights go off like normal. I dont know why the battery light is on as the all the lights, radio, and other electrical components work just fine.

The battery light should stay on until the engine starts. Once the alternator is charging the battery it should go off. The check engine light should go off after it cycles thru the bulb test if there are no codes present. The mechanic was right in saying the light flashes if there is a miss, but actually the light would be flashing because there is a very serious problem occuring that could damage the catalytic converter. Once the issue calms down the light should still stay on until you clear the codes.

Going back to my other questions, does the engine crank now, and are you going to check fuel pressure next ?

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON SEVERAL CROWN VICS I HAVE WORKED ON ,& SOME OF THEM A SET OF PLUGS STOPPED IT,AND SOME OF THEM HAD TO HAVE 1 OR MORE COIL PACKS REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM THAT I FOUND THAT IF PLUGS & ALL COIL PACKS HAD BEEN REPLACED,AND IT WAS STILL IN THE IGNITION, IS THE WIRES GOING INTO THE PLUG ON THE COILPACK UNDER THE INTAKE TUBE, IF YOU REMOVE THE INTAKE TUBE,LOOK CLOSE AT THE WIRES FOR ANY BARE SPOTS,& LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE INTAKR TUBE IF YOU CAN SEE WHERE IT HAS RUBBED IT,IT IS ALMOST A GIVEN THERE IS A BARE SPOT OR CRACKED INSOLATION ON THE WIRE, ENOUGH TO CAUSE A MISFIRE, (FYI) IT TOOK ME MANY TIMES OF INSPECTING BEFORE I LOOKED CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE THE BARE SPOTS, BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS STRIP THE HARD PLASTIC AROUND THE WIRES BACK ENOUGH TILL YOU SEE GOOD CLEAN LOOKING WIRE,THEN SEPERATE THE WIRES AND IF YOU HAVE LIQUID ELECTICAL TAPE USE THAT AND THEN TAPE THEM WITH ROLL ELECTRICAL TAPE ,BUT IF YOU TAPE THEM UP GOOD SO WHEN THE WIRE IS BENT ENOUGH FOR THE INTAKE TUBE TO CLEAR ,& YOU CANNOT SEE THE WIRES GOING IN TO THE PLUG WITH A ROLL OF ELECTRICAL TAPE THAT WILL WORK TOO, I HOPE THIS TRICK WILL WORK AS GOOD FOR YOU AS HAS ME ON DOZENS OF CROWN VICS, ESPECIALLY P71 POLICE CARS.

SOURCE: 2000 Crown Vic cranks but won't start.

Check the fuel pump reset switch again, if it is popped back out then replace that little switch in the trunk, any ford one will do. it works off a magnet and a bearing to close the circuit for the fuel pump. easy fix.

If it runs smooth and the check engine light is off the tune up may help. Depending on mileage you may have an exhaust restriction or low compression.

Engine does not start immediately when cranking

The problem could be many things. Is the engine light on? Check for proper fuel pressure. Remove one spark plug and inspect. Your vehicle may just need a simple tune up. Spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter.

Does the crown vic police intercepter take as much oil as the regular crown vic? (when changing the oil and filter)

I ~think~ the 1999 is the same as the 2000 (mine is a 2000 P71)

The 2000 CVPI (Crown Vic Police Interceptor) owners manual recommends the following:

Engine Oil - Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil 5.0 quarts

Transmission Fluid - Motorcraft Mercon V ATF 13.9 quarts (fluids Mercon & Mercon V are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, DO NOT MIX)

Fuel Tank - 19.0 gallons

Break Fluid - DOT 3

Rear Axle Lubricant - Motorcraft 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant 3.75 pints (add 4 oz of Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A or equilavent meeting Ford Spec. EST-M2C118-A for complete refill of Traction-Lok Rear Axles)

Engine Data - 4.6L V8 Engine
Cubic Inches - 281
Required Fuel - 87 Octane
Firing Order - 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Spark Plug Gap - 1.3-1.4 mm (0.052-0.056 inch)
Ignition System - Coil On Plug
Compression Ratio - 10.0:1

I hope this helps!

Massive tune up for a 2000 crown victory

Plugs, Direct ignition modules should be checked for conductivity and resistance, oil, oil filter, 14 quarts of tranny fluid, tranny filter, oil, oil filter, serpentine belt, tensioner pulley setup ( cops beat on these motors) fuel filter, flush the coolant system ( a new radiator is great for these cars), timing belt, purple oil for the rear end, Id either ad Lucas (my first chioce) or marvel mystery oil for the motor, tranny, and rear end, as long as there isnt any serious trouble mechanicaly this will condtion the moving parts and reduce breakdown of those partts. Other than that i think you'd be wasting money, i work at a dealer that specializes in goverment cars, ive seen theese steps bring a car that wont move and barely run, to a dependable daily driver. good luck

2005 Crown Vic Police Interceptor: Starts then stalls

Have you checked the fuel filter. Fuel pump will pressure up, but fuel filter could be clogged and not work without the pressure of the fuel pump.
