Question about 2003 Ford Focus
258000 miles ,was running good, turned off. tried to restart, runs really eratic and makes metal hitting metal noise............
Have you checked the timing belt yet ??
Depending on which engine you have, it may be an interference engine, which could damage the valves if the belt breaks while the engine is running or starting.

sounds like the a/c compressor is siezed, i would not recommend using the a/c, the only problem with that is when you put the defroster on the ac will kick on, the best way is to unplug the a/c compressor, if you look on the top of the ac compressor there should be a 2 wire connector, unplug it and this will disable the a/c. to fix the problem the a/c compressor needs to be replaced and the entire ac system flushed and replace the suction accumulator, orifice tube and if it has rear ac it will need a thermostatic expansion valve

Could be cam chain tensioner, valve lifter.
Add "motor medic" to oil in a warm engine.
The increased viscosity will push harder on the cam chain tensioner....if that is the issue.
Clean oil - better quality (synthetic) oil will clean a clogged lifter.

might be your fan belt-if you dont have any dry lube stick use a bit of soap-apply-grind a small amount on fan belt while its running-unless belt is worn or loose the noise should cease

What kind of noise is it? If it is a "clicking" noise, a common problem on the Expy, you will need to replace the Blend Door Actuator. This is a small unit on the passenger side, rear. When you take the panel off, turn the key on to make the noise so you can locate it (there are actually 2 units) they have plastic gears that strip out, making the clicking noise. To remove the panel to access, you'll have to carefully pop the panel off and remove a couple of bolts around the seatbelt.
