Question about 1994 Isuzu Trooper

Problem with voltage regulator 1994 Trooper

The regulator is not working correctly. When the volts get too high the computer senses it and goes into safety mode. It was suggested that the regulator might be in the alternator. Anybody have any ideas? I'd appreciate them.

My battery light came on while i was driving than a few minutes later everything shut off. The battery was replaced in january and alternator was replaced in october.. what could be the problem?


For the alternator to work B+ voltage must be applied to the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator ,plus the alternator is computer controlled , by the PCM !
Charging System Indicators
BATTERY The IPC illuminates the battery indicator when the following occurs:

The PCM detects that the generator output is less than 11 volts or greater than 16 volts. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM requesting illumination.

The IPC determines that the system voltage is less than 11 volts or greater than 16 volts. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the body control module (BCM) indicating the system voltage.

Your best is to have a qualified repair shop check it out ! Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored !
DTC P0562
The powertrain control module (PCM) continuously monitors that the system voltage stays within the proper range. If the PCM detects an excessively high system voltage, DTC P0563 will set. A high voltage condition may cause a stalling condition or other drive ability concerns.
DTC P0621
The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the generator turn on signal circuit to control the generator. A high side driver within the PCM allows the PCM to turn the generator ON and OFF. When Generator operation is desired, the PCM sends a 5 volt signal to the voltage regulator via the generator turn on signal circuit. This causes the voltage regulator to begin controlling the generator field circuit. Once the Generator is enabled by the PCM, the voltage regulator controls generator output independently of the PCM. Under certain operating conditions, the PCM can turn Off the generator by turning Off the 5 volt signal on the generator turn on signal circuit. The PCM has fault detection circuitry which monitors the state of the generator turn on signal circuit. If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, this DTC will set. The voltage regulator also contains fault detection circuitry. If the regulator detects a problem, the regulator will ground the generator turn on signal circuit, pulling the voltage low. This also causes the PCM to set the DTC.
DTC P0622
Checking for codes an voltage drop testing the connections an using a scan tool to check data parameters is the only way to solve your problem . Which means taking to a qualified repair shop !

Blue wire to ignition switch,from alternator voltage regulator.( 12 volts ) ECU power wire, Red wire to battery terminal. Blue wire goes from alternator to the ignition switch. The voltage regulator senses the incoming voltage from the blue wire. ) it grounds the green field wire This energizes the alternator field, and the alternator begins to produce a charge and sends it to the battery via the main output wire. When the voltage regulator senses 14 volts from the blue field wire, it cuts the ground to the green field wire. Good-Day!

Ignition system wiring, voltage, regulator how to repair


Hello, again, again Bridget. First I sent you explanation of the ignition system and I gave you my best guess---ignition module on your 1994 Plymouth with V6 3.4 L engine.

As far as voltage regulation goes there isn't any external devise to do this. This voltage voltage regulation take place inside the alternator after the three phase AC voltage is turn into none regulated DC voltage. Now this DC voltage goes thru a voltage regulator that built into the alternator where the output DC voltage is 13.8 to 14.1 DC Volts. Now, the alternator is regulated for current by the it wire windings in the alternator. Larger the copper wire the more current the alternator will produce. GB.....stewbison

New alternator new battery installed still wont charge the battery and radio and power anttena dont work


If you have a voltage meter, you should check if your voltage regulator is working correctly. The voltage regulator should keep the voltage to the battery something under 15 volts when the motor is running (more than 13.5 volts with all electrical turned off).

If more than 14.5 volts, you may be damaging your new battery and regulator is not working properly. Also, radio may not come on because a voltage sensor is protecting it from the high voltage. Antenna is controlled by radio so that should not be working either.

I had a similar problem with a '95 Rodeo. The transmission shifted gears based on electrical power sent to it. The voltage regulator in my alternator went defective and was outputting 16 volts. The higher voltage was fooling the transmission into thinking it needed to be in high gear from a dead stop when it really needed to be in low.

Take your alternator off and have Autozone test it to see if it needs replaced.

Make sure the ground wire going out of the voltage regulator is grounded and the alternator ground is good.Check all ground wires to there are the ones that stop the over charging.Theres also is a small little capacitor that should bolt right next to the regulator that holds alot of the over charging..

It sounds to me like the voltage regulator is acting screwy.I believe on your vehicle it is an integral part of the alternator.The alt.may be testing satisfactory as far as output but it may not be regulateing the voltage correctly.
