Question about 2005 Ford Focus

1 Answer

I went to the dealer and asked if i could have a copy of the diagnostic they ran. They did not give me one but wrote fault code P0420 on a piece of paper, like i know what that is. He said i would have to replace the manifold if i replaced the catalyic converter is that true? Its a 2005 ford focus and has 82,000 miles on it. I bought it July 2007 and i got a extended warrenty but they say thats not covered. only major repairs. That seems pretty major to me.

I looked up the code p0420,------- the catalyst system efficiency below threshold (cylinder bank #1).Try changing the oxygen sensor, the one by the cat converter first. Yes it is true, the cat and the manifold is all one unit, but try the sensor first,it's cheaper.

My 1999 Chev Tahoe will not start - Has codes p0430 and p0420

Hi Charlie,
Diagnostic Test Codes (DTCs) P0420 and P0430 ar "Catalyst Efficiency" codes. These simply mean that the catalytic converters in your vehicle are not performing the way they should be. To fix these codes, you will most likely have to replace the converters. However, these codes do NOT indicate why your engine wil not start. There are many things that can cause an engine to not start. Many of which may or may not set fault codes. You need to determine if the engine is getting fuel and ignition first then go from there.

I got a diagnostic test and came up code p0420. what should i do to fix the code for it to pass ommissions test?

Replace the 02 sensor bank 1. Although there was a service bulletin for your year car. Ask your dealer about it. Also might be covered under warranty

That is the engine management computer telling you that a fault has occured and you should get the car onto a diagnostic computer asap to check what the fault is.Diagnostic machines only give you the fault codes NOT the fault.so when youve checked it out get back with the codes so that we can give you itemised fault remedies.(as the machine is quiet expensive,i sometimes suggest that you get a diagnostic done at a dealer, then ask for advice, its easier.and cheaper.)

I have a 2005 pontiac grand prix with super charger it is giving a p0420 code. how do I fix this. It was giving a miss fire code a few weeks ago changed the coil packs and it stopped. Now it is runnin kind...

The code PO420 you have is Catalyst System efficiency is below threshold bank one. Usually replacing the O2 sensor that's the front most in the exhaust system will cure your problem,

Your Check Engine light is on and you find a P0420 code for a catalytic converter fault. Does that really mean your converter has reached the end of the road and needs to be replaced? A new converter can cost $600 to $1000 or more if a new car dealer or repair shop does the job, or maybe half that amount if you do it yourself. It's an expensive fix that may or may not be necessary. The problem, in most cases, is an emissions issue, not a performance issue that affects the way the engine runs.

A P0420 diagnostic trouble code is a "generic" fault code that is set when the Onboard Diagnostic II (OBD II) system sees a drop in converter efficiency. The OBD II system monitors catalyst efficiency by comparing the switching activity of the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors in the exhaust. The upstream O2 sensor in theexhaust manifold reflects the condition of the exhaust gases as they exit the engine. The downstream O2 sensor in or behind the catalytic converter reflects the condition of the exhaust after it passes through he converter.

The catalytic converter is like an after-burner. It oxidizes (burns) any residual fuel vapors (unburned hydrocarbons or HC) in the exhaust. It also burns any carbon monoxide (CO) in the exhaust. The exhaust must meet federal emission standards, and if a problem exists that causes emissions to exceed the federal limits by 150%, the OBD II system is supposed to catch the fault, set a code and turn on the Check Engine light.

Thanks

Nissan Sentra 2001 gxe with code p0420

You will need a new catalytic convertor assembly. Yours is below treshold efficiency in other words its "no good".If you have it replaced, ask the garage/dealer to give you the old one back. Its worth some cash if its full. It doesn't matter thet it failed. They are going after the mesh inside of it and that is worth some $$$$. May not be much , but better than nothing.

Engine light came on. The dealership said it was diagnostic code P0420 and that it would cost @ $1,200.00 to repair. This seem pretty high. What is this diagnostic code about and is the repair rate

Hi, this code represents a Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). and the repair, considering that it will be repaired by the dealership, seems to be in the normal cost range. The labor is what usually inflates the price when dealing with catalytic replacements.

You could probably get a better deal by taking it to a non dealership type of repair shop. This may cut at least 200 dollars of the original dealership quote.

Please rate and god bless:)

first, code b0100 is a fault in the restraint system. front end sensor, restraint sensing diagnostic module or communication between the 2 are suspect problems po420 is an efficiency problem with catalytic converter. most likely would need new converter, but exhaust leaks and oxygen sensor malfuctions can also set code. if this vehicle is under 80,000 miles and does need converter, dealer should repair for free under warranty. that is federally mandated.
