The car had 1700 miles on it when I got it. The battery was replaced at that time, I now have 6600 miles on it and it has not shifted nice since I got it, I had a dealer drive it and he felt it was OK.

If your car is brand new (you are the first owner) or for some reason someone disconnected the negative battery cable then what is going on is your TCM (Transmission Control Module) is trying to learn and adapt to the way you drive. Until it fully compiles all of the data and can "learn" this it will shift rough. Give it 2-3 full weeks of daily driving. If after the 3rd week or so it still shifts rough then it is not storing info and there is a problem. If you are not the only person driving this vehicle then it will take longer for the car to adapt.

Hmm. Do you still have a warranty? And did you buy it from a Ford certified dealer?

99 ford taurus car will not hold back going down

I would start with the 'PCM', or Power Control Module. You will have to take it to a garage with diagnostic capabilities to have this checked. The PCM controls how and when your car shifts, what RPM's it shifts at, etc......

My 2008 taurus x has a whining noise in the transmission and is shifting hard. Fluid level is fine.50k miles

Electronic diagnostics needed if fluid level is correct. One possibility is line pressure too high.

most likely a stripped out torque converter or a broken pump shaft. common on the taurus. transmission has to come out to repair.

Poor gas mileage on 2008 Ford taurus

Are you using the correct grade of fuel.
Manufacturers claim that a car will do 28 to the gallon.
This is done under ideal conditions at a constant speed on a rolling road.
Wind, hills, overtaking and tire pressures will decrease fuel mileage.
Your car is ok. Don`t expect much more unless you want to drive at 56mph
good luck
