You have to remove the door panel first then unplug the mirror and remove the screws from the mirror and then put the new one on going in reverse you can try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

How do I replace a outside minor on a 2005 ford Taurue
There are three bolts that hold it on. PLus the wiring. The triangle above the door panel pops loose, behind the mirror bracket. Be careful, it has a tab that goes down behind the door panel. Pop it loose, you can pull it down far enough to access the 10mm nuts.

1. remove the door panel by pulling lightly on the door panel.
2. remove the tweeter (small black thing in the corner of the door in front of the mirror).
3. unplug mirror if electric
4. remove the 3 mirror retaining bolts

Mirror — Outside Rear View Removal
NOTE: Do not remove the exterior mirror assembly when repairing an individual part. Individual components can be installed without removing the exterior mirror.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove the front door trim panel; refer to Section 501-05.
  1. Remove the speaker.
    1. Remove the screws.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    1. Remove the speaker.

    1. Disconnect the power mirror wiring clips.
    1. Remove the outside rear view mirror nuts.
    1. Remove the outside rear view mirror.
      • Feed the power mirror wiring through the opening in the front door (20124).

Installation
  1. NOTE: When the battery (10655) is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy.

the Glass element or the glass and backing assembly? if just the glass it is just glued on, Scotch two sided tape works as well, if the Glass and backing fixture it just snaps in and out of the drive motors.

Replacing a mirror cap
Yes you can.
First you have to remove the mirror glass. Position mirror all the way in and up so you can grasp the bottom of mirror on the outboard edge. Then pull outward remove mirror.
Now you will see the 4 tabs holding the cover on,depress tabs and remove cover.

Sometimes the mirrors outside may have been pushed all the way by hand to one side on a Ford and it's as simple as you lightly pushing it by hand, then move the switch on the inside. A kid or car wash may have pushed it in hard and it's hung.
