Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

Chipped pistons on a caravelle 2.6i

We recently had a new reconditioned engine installed in our 1996 2.6i caravelle. We replaced radiator, did the exhaust and used all new and orif\ginal parts. At her 1000km we did a oil change and fitted a new oil filter. She ran perfect. There were no oil leaks, the temperature was perfect and she purred like a kitten. At about 2000km, we noticed that she was smoking at the exhaust. We took her back to the garage and they investigated. Two of the pistons had been chipped. What could have caused this as we would like to know before we carry on as we do not want the same problem to happen

SOURCE: 98 f150 4.2 110.000 miles went to start up engine started clacking and smoking out exhaust

the intakes go bad on these engines....... they leak coolant in the cylinders and cause a hydro lock that causes the rods to bend making the piston skirt hit the crank......" clicking noise" theres a law suit in progress for this issue......... you can find info on the internet

SOURCE: 2.3l ranger keeps overheating, been through two radiators already.

Hello Ranger Joe, eight months and two radiators is very uncommon. Question, Have you visually confirmed the leak in the radiators or is the leak near the hose connections? Replacing the radiator, cap, water pump, & the thermostat leaves only two others, the hoses and the engine block/heads. Far fitched will be something or somebody poking holes in the radiator.

SOURCE: Oil Leak Valve Cover

If it is leaking around the valve cover then that is the problem. Just remove the bolts from the valve cover in a cross pattern (ex. back right - front left and go back and foward and work till you make it to the middle. Go purcahse a valve gasket for both right and left and replace them. Tighten in the same cross pattern and be careful no to pinch the gasket.

1992 geo storm overheated blew holes in the radiator and now it wont start at all.... Sprks but no compression.

no compression is , head gasket failure or rings have lost tension
if it got so far over heated as to destroy the radiator , I would suggest that a replacement good motor from the wreckers / junk yard or engine reconditioning shop would be a cheap fix as the engine will require extensive head , block and piston repair

Engine barely cranks to start when hot

There are some facts which come to bear in this case of hard starting. When the engine is hot, all moving parts are also hot. When metal is heated like the air in a balloon is heated, it expands. When the pistons and rings in the engine expand they create more friction within the cylinder and thus more crank power is required of the starter. What do I do to fix this? First, check to see that there are no loose, frayed or broken wires in the battery to starter or starter to ground connections. Second, ensure that your battery is fully charged and at 59 F. By having a warm, fully charged battery you ared delivering maximum cranking amps to the starter. If the starter still does poorly with a cold engine then it is time to remove the starter. While starters can be repaired, it is usually cheaper and faster to purchase a reconditioned or new one. Once your replacement starter is installed that should do the trick! There are some remote possibilities which could complicate your efforts like if you had a recent front end collision or your engine has overheated recently but generally the mainstream problems have been the focus in this repair description. Cheers. Al

Piston slap

I think my friend, you should look towards getting your engine replaced. If you hear like a clicking or clunk noise while you drive, the internals of your engine are worn out and hitting against each other.
Your options are:
1. Scrap car or sell it
2. Swap engine for a new one
3. Get the engine reconditioned

When the timing belt breaks on a 1996 Mazda Protege 1.5 DOCS engine will the valves fall down and get bent?

the valves wont fall down as such what may happen is that some of them may stay open & when the piston comes up to the top it will hit them causing major damage like broken pistons bent valve stem, if this happens you may need a new or reconditioned engine.....hope this helps.....cheers.

I've got a problem with my heater. I installed a raideator recently. Heater was working prior to installation. Any ideas? Does the 1996 Jeap GRand Cherokee have a thermostat?

i have yet to see an internal combustion engine without a thermostat, unless someone removed it.
the top radiator hose, which you attached to the new radiator, has the thermostat in the other end in a housing which bolts to the engine. on a car that old you should have replaced the hoses too, if they were original. if the engine is running OK, then your thermostat is good. Take a look at the scores of problems here with the headline "i replaced thermostat and still have no heat". when the engine gets warm it opens and lets coolant flow through the radiator to cool. as your core is above the engine, and worked before you began this project, most likely you need to burp an air bubble out of the core. i am sure that you could find a video on youtube of this process.

The best check is fill the radiator with water when the engine is running and see if the water blows out the top of the rad. it it does then you have cylinder head problem's if not a new rad. will sort it. Cheers
