Recently I have had a problem where it feels like the gear backfires as I am driving. For example, I was stopped at a light one day, when I took my foot off the break and went to step on the gas, it felt like it lost power for a few seconds then propelled forward. Initially it was only doing this after I was stopped, then recently it started doing it as I drive, where it feels like I loose power then it picks up speed. I took it in to midas and they were unable to find anything wrong, as no lights come on when this happens. They suggested I take it in to a transmission shop but I'd like to know what I am dealing with before I go. Any suggestions?

Renault trafic wont start...engine warning light flashing

The light and the word stop should be sending you a clear message . The engine hard starting and sluggish is also sending a message and if you do not heed the message and have the fault codes read and the problem fixed then the next message may be replace the engine or gear box . The light is there --not to be an annoyance ---but to inform you that something drastic is going wrong and it needs urgent attention.

Service engine light is flashing and runs sluggish when in gear.runs fine when in neutral, any ideas?

Flashing check engine light means Eminant Engine Damage soon!
Sounds like a bad or clogged catalytic converter. Maybe take to Autozone or O'reillys' have them hook up "Scan Tool" for free & get codes..

Check engine Transmission

It sounds like you have a TV ( throttle valve) cable problem.
If you look at the throttle body on the engine intake manifold, you will see an accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if applicable) and a TV cable that runs to the transmission.
Make sure the tv cable is attached to the throttle body. If you pull on the cable you should feel spring resistance.
Let me know what you find.

Momentarily Sluggish Acceleration

Are you loosing power to the ecu when the car is shut down? most cars with an ECU that controls timing, fuel, or boost can be forced to relearn the car if the ECU looses power (called a "limp" mode). I'd look into this. Also are you getting any check engine lights? considering the description of the problem, this would help to diagnose. Try getting the car started and running normally, then turn the car off but do not kill the power to the car, just stop the motor from running...Fire the engine back up and try to give the car a good stomp on the gas and see if you get the same sluggish problems...my 2 cents... Good luck future auto DIY's

Check gearbox light, car drives sluggish, heater cuts off.

You have a bad gearbox position sensor located on the transmission. When the transmission computer sees the fault in that sensor it goes into a protective mode in your car starts out in second gear that's why it is sluggish. This is a very common failure on that car. The heater issue is not related.
