Question about 2003 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

I have a Dodge SX 2.0 R/T 2003 and the gear shifter is getting harder and harder to put into gear, especially 2nd gear and especially when it's cold. Once the car is warm it seems to go into gear

The problem resides primarily in the stick shift. Once I'm in gear there doesn't seem to be any slippage when I release the clutch. Especially second gear will feel like I'm grinding the gear within the stick shift. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: 96 Dodge Dakota hesitates in shifting, especially

hard shift between 2nd and 3rd should normally get solved by changing fluid and filter. but if the problem still exists :--You could start by removing the transmission pan and switching the 1-2 solenoid with the 2-3 solenoid. If the late shift moves to the 1-2 shift, then the solenoid is at fault. But if the 2-3 shift is still late, the problem lies elsewhere.
Also remove range sensor, take it apart and clean the contacts inside.
The unit is located on the side of the transmission (drivers side) just forward of center.

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

My dodge neon stuck in first gear wont go in any other gear its all play

There are bushings in the linkage for the shifter under the car at the shifter and at the trans. Those wear out or the retaining pin clip may have come off and pin got loose.

2009 dodge charger is stuck on an incline and will not come out of park

happens to me allot,it will go in gear but you will have to apply allot more pressure than normal to get it out of park, the steeper the incline the harder you will have to pull on gear shifter( you will almost think your going to break the shifter, but you wont) to keep it from happening next time, when you pull in and put in park before you let off brake pedal apply the emergency brake, and when you get back in car to leave, start and put in gear then release the emergency brake.....

Low gears wont slide into gear when in traffic jams or hot.

Sounds like you do need a clutch adjustment.Do you have a hydraulic clutch?Check beside the brake master cylinder and look for a SMALLER size master cylinder which may be low on fluid.(PUT ONLY BRAKE FLUID IN TO FILL IT).Hopefully it is just low and the brake fluid fill will restore your clutch adjustment.

Sounds like a tune-up issue, but does it have a check engine light on? Can you elaborate more on your transmission problem? It jumps out of gear? Like it is Neutral? Or does it stick in 2nd?

This kind of sounds like you might of broke your shifter interlock. If that is the case you will need a new shift cable.
