Question about 1995 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

I have a 1995 gmc sonoma. 2.2 liter 5 speed. Replaced fuel filter and fuel pump. It will turn over but will not start, but you can hear the pump kick on but it acts like its not getting fuel to the throttle body.

A yellow spark is not what you want to see. You want a blue to white spark. It could be a number of things, how long has it been since the engine was tuned up? It could be the cap, rotor, wires and plugs need changed. Or it could be the coil is weak.

Check your fuel pressure it should be 41-47 with key on and engine off.Sounds like the fuel pump is weak. You might want to check the fuel filter too it could be clogged.

Hello ,
The area you need to check ( check owners manual) is most likely this is two issues that could be. It could be your fuel pump relay , that is what triggers your fuel pump to work.Or your fuel pump itself. However first thing I would check is your fuel pump relay, which is normally square like fuse, check fuse box area, or sometimes it is under hood near firewall in a box, with other fuse relays. Thanks Mike

Have you tried starting the truck up using Starting Fluid? If it starts and runs for a few seconds, you definitely have a fuel issue, and from the sounds of it you may have faulty injectors or fuel pressure regulator. If the starting fluid doesn't start the engine for a few seconds, you may have a spark, or ignition problem. Let me know what happens when you use Starting Fluid and I will help you out further.

I have fire too my spark plugs no dash codes or check engine light comming on fuel pump does not appear too be working its throttlebody so i sprayed gas in it truck still wont start its ah 1995 4.3 sonoma...

Try using a throttle body cleaner, spray it in the intake, behind the butterfly and all that carbon will run out. You say the fuel pump don't seem to be working. Have you checked the relay. On the other hand can you hear the pump come on by listening at the gas tank neck. Have someone to turn the switch to ON position (not Start) and you listen to hear for the pump to kick on.Another way to check is to take the fuel filter inlet hose loose from the filter and turn the switch on and gas should be pumped out. If it does not, the pump is gone.

Hard to start, possibly fuel system problem

Check the fuel pressure. You should be at 60-66 psi for the injectors to fuel properly. Depending on where you are in the country, some areas have more moisture in their fuels that others. Try running a can of Techron fuel treatment every third tank of fuel. Make sure your getting fuel at a good station. Stations that do not maintain their tanks and buy discount fuels usually help shorten the life of fuel pumps.
