Door jam switches do require some dis assembly to diagnose since the wiring side is hidden inside the body. There is no other way.

It is a sticky sensor in the door latch mechanism. Spray it w/ WD-40 and follow up with a dose of silicone spray. Open/close doors several times and it should be ok. If you have a problem with 1 door the other 3 are sure to follow---DO THIS TO ALL 4 DOORS!!!!!!!!!

SOURCE: 2003 Explorer door ajar light stay on when all doors are closed

I had this problem on my 2003 explorer and took WD40 and gave the lock mechanism a good dose where it meets the clasp on the door jam. Then open and close the doors a couple of times to get them working. They get gummed up and sometimes have a tendency to stick.

SOURCE: my door ajar comes on sometimes when door is not ajar

There is a magnet type sensor in the door jamb and door that come together when you close the doors. You have to replace the magnet switch in the door that it is bad in. these newer model Fords are notorious for those particular switches going bad

This can be a very difficult procedure and sometimes not possible on certain makes and models. It may be easier to gently pry the top of the door away from the vehicle and insert a small wedge to keep it ajar. Take apart a coat hanger and insert through door opening and with hook end grab door lock and open.

Door ajar warning

This is caused by one of the many door sensor switches being defective. You can tear all the door apart and replace all the switches or have the dealer scan the body control module and quickly pinpoint the bad switch.,

The door ajar light stays on. All doors are shut.

at each door there is a micro switch mounted inside the door on the door latch mech that signals if the door is ajar, there are 2 of these switches on the rear hatch, so that is 6 total, the way we find out which one or ones in many cass is to hook up a body module scanner and read the output from the switches, then we don't have to guess and tear the whole truck apart, so the bottom line here is a trip to the local ford dealer is while worth the money

I have a 2003 ford explorer and the door ajar light won't go out.

each door has a miniature switch (called the door ajar switch) located on the door latch assembly inside the door, there are 6 of them in a four door, one for each door and two for the rear hatch, any one of them can cause this problem and it is about 1 hour to rpelace one switch, ford has a scanner that can the system and ID exactly which switch is bad, that is the only way to do this without tearing the whole truck apart.

Remove "Door Ajar" switch. Clean the switch and use a graphite type lubricant (I recommend "Dry-Slide") to lubricate the actuator on the switch. Reassemble the switch.

The switches are located inside the door panels, attached to the catch mechanism.

1) Remove interior door panel.

2) Using a T-27 Torx driver, remove the 3 bolts holding the catch in the door.
2a) The door ajar switch is the only part on the mechanism with the 2-wire harness.
2b) The switch is located at the rear catch for the sliding door.

3) Using a small flat screwdriver, gently lift the black tab on the catch mechanism and rotate the switch to remove it from the catch assembly.

4) Using a rag, clean the small round actuator and apply a small amount of graphite lubricant to the actuator and work the switch so it moves freely.

5) Reassemble the catch and the door.

Door ajar light stays on along with dome light

I know the problem. Mine does it too. The fix is easy. Open & close doors to find which one is causing the problem. Open that door panel and find the release latch at back of door. There are 2 wire harnesses attached to the latch. Unhook the wires and spray sockets of latch. There is a ballbearing that gets stuck in switch. Lubricate that ballbearing and work latch manually several times. This problem will reoccur occasionally especially when there has been a lot of rain. Good Luck
