Question about 2001 Jeep Wrangler

There is a harmonic balancer on the rear output shaft of my new process 231-transfer case,that the rear drive shaft slides onto.how do i get the balancer off,to replace the rear oil seal on the transfer case ?

Transfer case replacement costs


transfer cases are those bits that are bolted to the rear of a gear box to give ratio changes and drives to front and rear wheels. On some vehicles it can be done in vehicle as the case has external bolts and slides onto a splined output shaft from the gear box . On others the whole case has to come out as the bolts are internal. I am curious as the heading is for an X type jag 2004 and is it a 4 wd

I have a 1996 astro van. Front drive shaft moves to the transfer case. Nothing from transfer case back. Is there a clutch in the transfer case? Any help would be greatly appreciated.


The front drive shaft moves when the truck moves.. This is a "All wheel system" NOT a 4 Wheel Drive system.. Yes there is a clutch pack in the transfer case that is supposed to send the power to the wheels as needed. for traction. Make sure you keep all the U joints lubed and in good shape.. these are very expensive drive shafts. You really did not tell us the problem.. possibly the truck does not go ?. in which case it could be a bad transfer case or possibly a broke output shaft on the trans. except for the output shaft and rear housing these transmissions are the same as the 2 wheel drive models.post a comment and let us know what you find, By the way check to see if there is any fluid in the transfer case..

My 1991 mazda navajo 4x4 vibrates at mid to high speeds and leaks trany fluid from transfer case and transmission


Something is obviously out of balance. I am going out on a limb and guessing this.

and the faster you go, vibration is always more noticeable.

How to change a harmonic balance


Hello....Well first of all...most of the time...To do this job...you will need special tools...There is a center bolt that connects the balancer to the crank shaft...It's driven in really tight so most likely..a pneumatic wrench or a good breaker bar will need to be used to remove it...once you remove the center bolt...there is a tool called a puller that is used to walk the balancer off the crank shaft...You can either rent or buy this tool...in some cases a gear puller will work...or a tool called a harmonic balancer puller can be used..it has either 2 or 3 hooks to clamp onto the harmonic balancer and a bolt in the center that you tighten with a wrench..as you do,,,the balancer slowly inches forward until it is off the crankshaft...now to get the new balancer on..there is a tool called a Press which is a bolt that is specially designed to do the opposite of the puller...you place the new balancer on the crankshaft..install the press as you would the center bolt...and tighten it with a wrench and it will slowly walk the balancer onto the crank shaft...Then you remove the press and install the center bolt..preferrably with a torque wrench...Now...after reading all this...are you sure you want to do this yourself....an honest mecanic will most likely do this job for $150 bucks....Parts and labor....If you do this yourself..let me know how it goes....I hope this was helpful....PEACE...

Ok got the retaining bolt off of harmonic balancer by using a breaking bar now using a 3 prong gear puller to remove balancer but it just dont want to budge.any suggestions


you may have the wrong puller to do the job. suggest you try an advance auto parts store and rent the right puller for the repair,all your money to rent the right tool will be refunded after the tools returned. the harmonic balancer should be removed easily with the right removal tool and a small ammount of wd40 sprayed onto the crankshaft behind and in front of the balancer onto the shaft. keep in mind that there is a half moon keeper key on the shaft where the balancer slides onto the crankshaft. lube the shaft well and it should slide off with ease with the removal tool. thank you for choosing fixya.com!!

How do you get the front driveshaft out of 2001 chevy 4X4


Remove transfer case shield. Remove clamp on boot
where front drive shaft meets transfer case. use a flat
screwdriver to pry free end up and release clamp. (you need a special clamp tool to reinstall clamp )
Remove 4 bolts at differential end that hold U joint Retainers to yoke. Slide drive shaft to rear enough to clear yoke. then let drive shaft drop so it clears differential and slide forward until it come off transfer case shaft.

Leaking oil on rear driver's side wheel. Hub seal? How hard to replace?


NOT THAT HARD IF YOU HAVE SLIDE HAMMER AND A 3 JAW ADAPTER.TO REMOVE REAR OUTPUT DRIVE SHAFT SEAL AND AND NEED A SEAL DRIVER TO DRIVE NEW SEAL IN THE TRANSFER CASE REAR.OUTPUT SHAFT HOUSING.

Transfer case removal and installation


   You need to remove the skid plate/crossmember (6 3/4 bolts at the frame and 3 nuts at the trans mount.). Support the trans first with a jack and a block of wood before removing. Remove the rear drive shaft from the differential and pull it out of the transfer case. Unbolt the front shaft from the transfer case only and wire to the side with a coat hanger.Disconnect the vacuum connector from the top and the speedo cable. Unbolt the shifter and bracket (tricky operation). unbolt the transfer case from the trans and pry it rearward with a floor jack under it. Reverse operation to install. The 87 used a different case than the 231 from the factory but the 231 will work. You may have a concern with the length of the shift linkage. If you do anyone with a welder can extend it for you.
