Put it on jack stands. Start it up, put it in 4x4. Put it in drive. Both front and rear drive shafts should be spinning. Do they?

Why doesn't my 4x4 work

Do you have mechanical-shift four wheel drive,or electronic-shift, 4WD system ? Any lights lit on the dash ?
The electronic-shift, 4WD system consists of the following components:
  • Transfer case (For transfer case repair procedures, refer to Section 308-07B ).
  • 4WD control module (For 4WD control module installation, refer to 4WD control module in this section.)
  • Mode select switch (MSS)
  • Gearmotor encoder assembly
  • Automatic locking hubs (hub locks)
  • Pulse vacuum hub lock (PVH) solenoid and vacuum lines
  • The mechanical-shift four wheel drive (4WD) system consists of the following components:
  • Transfer case (For transfer case repair procedures, refer to Section 308-07B ).
  • Transfer case shift lever
  • Manual locking hubs
  • 4x4 indicators
  • Shift linkage (hub locks)

How do I know if my 4WD is working overtime in my vehicle? Everyone keeps telling me to drive in 2WD while riding in the city but I don't see an option for 2WD, My gear shift only reads: 4WD hi, Neutral,...

The transfer case in your Jeep has what's called a viscous coupler inside of it. Though you physically put it in 4 high, it does not operate the front wheels unless the rear wheels begin to slip. Therefore, driving on dry roads, you actually are only using the two rear wheels.
On direct engagement transfer cases, you would need to physically select 4wd. Those shouldn't be driven on dry roads extensively.
So, your friends are correct, pertaining to most 4x4"s but not yours (I don't know for sure if any other 4x4's use that system except for Land Rover).
One thing you need to know about yours is that you MUST always have the same exact tires on all four corners.... Size, brand and age. (rolling circumference) If you don't it will fool the transfer case into thinking a wheel is slipping and that will cause the coupler to fail, because it will stay engaged when it's not needed and overheat.
4 low is only used when in very deep snow or pulling a heavy load. Max speed in 4 low is about 15mph.

if you have access to a lift put somone in it sent it up
start it up put in 4wd low and check to se if the
output shaft is turning from the transfer case to the
front difirential if it's not turning odd's are transfer case problem if it is turning listen each front hub for
grinding noise if there is check the offending hub
by the way if you can't use a lift find some level paved

put a ground strap from your transfer case to your transmission. also with someone listening under the car with the key on but not running put your foot on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the selecter to 4x4 low and see if you can hear the actuater respond

The 4x4 does not shift into 4 wheel drive not 4 hi or 4 low

Check the fuse to the 4x4, if the fuse is good then check the 4x4 electric motor actuator on the transfer case. You should hear it work from 2wd, 4hi to 4low and back to 2wd with the push of the switch. if you don't hear it working then check the wire harness at the actuator motor, look for any damages like corrosion or cracked wire connector clips. If the 4x4 actuator is working on the transfer case, then the front hub 4x4 actuator may have gone bad and that's located on the front differential. It's common for the clip there to corrode and break and is an easy fix with a new collar pin, at worst it's the diaphragm on the vacuum actuator that is located under the battery tray. There is a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, driver side but when that fails, your front hub stay's locked in the on position. Good luck and keep me posted and hope it's a simple fuse that has gone bad. You can pick up all these parts at Auto Zone or Parts Source and they will have the step by step instructions for you to get the job done with common tools.

4wd high range does not lite or engage

I had the same problem with my 98 sierra 4x4. Turned out that the electrical activator on the transfer case was not working. It will still go into 4 low but not 4 high. Replace the electrical switch on the transfer case and it should work again.
