transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in
heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself
to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

SOURCE: no reverse
there should be a vacuum tube on the pas side of the trans. its either diconnected or broken. or the bans are bad. also check the filter. mine went bad and all I did was change the filter and used synthetic fluid.
when the pan and filter is down see if there is a heavy spring in one of the corners. if its casing is broke then it wont allow fluid to travel to and fro.

You might want to have the ignition switch checked because there are three wires that run to the tranny and if it does not sent the correct voltage to the tranny (electric) then it doesn't know the RPM to shift, you may wonder how i know this? because i just had a tranny rebuilt three times over this same problem they replaced the harness from the ignition to god only knows where for 150.00 and now it is doing great.

It will work but you will have to modify the crossmember and driveshaft and the computer. The 4l60e is an easy trans to recondition

Very common. I have the same truck. I replaced the 2-4WD switch on the dash but the problem also was the actuator under the front end. very simple on replacing both parts.
