None. don't know what year make or model you have but idle adjustments have been gone since some where in the early 80s. vacuum leaks or throttle body sticking are most common issues for high idle.

Adjust idle

Hi Rick:
There is usually an Idle adjust or throttle stop adjust on the throttle linkage at the Carb. If fuel injection, check the throttle control linkage for an adjust screw.

How do I adjust the idle and how do I adjust the choke cable?

Carb? Probably yes since you mention choke
- Idle is adjusted by screwing the throttle stop screw in or out.
- Choke cable is adjusted by slacking off the outer cable clamp, or the inner wire clamp, placing the control in the desired position, placing the choke butterfly in the desired position, and tightening the clamps.

Hi, my rpm stays on high after cleaning the idle control valve

An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or ECM (electronic control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the IAC motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its idling rough


Check idle air control system (valve, hoses and wires). Check air intake and check the sensors installed in the air intake. Check vacuum for leaks.

Those listed are the most common faults causing fast idle in this type of engine.

I would check idle adjustment first. There are two idle controls on our cars, so it's not as straight forward as you'd think. There is the base idle (controlled by the screw) and the idle air control valve, controlled by the computer. This computer controlled value is used sparingly when needed. Mostly the car relies on the idle screw control. If this is set too low however, the computer will take over, and you'll think you have idle set correctly, until you let rpms drop from 2,000+ to idle, it will stall, or almost stall.

Adjust the idle screw up until idle raises to 1,000 rpms, then adjust it back down until you get to 850, but no more. If you adjust it more, the idle will stay at 850 because the computer controlled idle takes over. A lot of people (me included) will keep turning the screw all the way down, thinking everything is fine. Don't do it. Stop adjusting once you hit 850 rpms with a warm motor.

This is the easiest, quickest thing to check, so do it first before trying anything else.

Idle speed adjustment

the ecu drives a unit called an idle airspeed controller.if there is a vacuum leak,the computer will have the idle speed too high.
the IAC is a motor driven valve that controls airflow into the throttle is common for idle speeds in the range of 1400rpm instead of 800 in this situation.
check the air filter,the throttle body cleaned,and the IAC has to be free moving.
also make sure that your coolant temperature sensor is accurate or the computer will think the engine is cold and keep the idle really high.

the idle speed control can be adjusted on the pump by turning the adjusting screw that stops the accelerator lever.

Engine is shaking

check the idle, it is too low will stall when you are driving, just need to adjust the idle and make it a little faster only
