1998 Dakota, 3.9l v6 2wd... sounds like the same prob I am having. It has been called an intermediate shaft or steering knuckle. the orange peices are the brushings.. but from what I gather, you have to replace the whole part (no way around it). Been combing the local salvage yards and apparently its a very common problem... very hard item to find right now. The Dodge garages and Mopar will be more than glad to accomodate you for about 200 to 400 for the part. It is cross compatible with 97 to 02 models, but again, very hard to find.

I suggest you run this by your local parts guy so you can play "show & tell" with him. You point out the part and he will tell you what it is!!!

Steering

Make sure that the tyres on each side of the vehicle are of the same type of tread, and the same size and the same tread depth. All of these can cause "self steering".

If these aren't an issue, then check the track rod ends for play (wear)

If these are okay, then also check the steering rack mountings for play. There are rubber mounts and brackets which locate this. Sometimes they work loose on some models, or the rubber mountings can perish and/or wear out.

I refill and it leaks out even if engine off. have to refill by 25 miles. cant find the leak but puddles are under car around pump area. cant figure if it is hose or pump. looked at picture of powercraft...

Well don't know exactly what vehicle you are working on but it is very possible that if is a car then the inner seals on the rack-n-pinion are worn out causing the fluid to leak out. If it is the rack seals leaking then you will need to replace the rack-n-pinion. Good luck.

Steering problems

I need to know what type problem you are having....a lot of chrysler have rack and pinoin problems
If rubber boots are wet on each end of the unit you have to replace rack and pinion.....It has internal seals that cant be replaced....this will cause erratic steering that feels like it has air in the system..
also makes a small noticeable noise......although I need more info.

1992 Lincoln continental steering problem

your inner tie rod end either broke at the ball joint or it was not installed properly and came loose from the steering rack. Either way there should have been an issue with the steering prior to the popping noise. If there is power steering fluid there had to be damage to the rack and pinion unit and it will have to be replaced.

Rack and pinion or steering kit

your vehicle has a transverse mounted engine and most newer vehicls have rack and pinion steering versus a shaft going to a gear box with a drag link and sway bar type steering system. most full size suvs have the gear box set up. some suvs like dodge durango have both a gear box and a rack and pinion. your vehicle has only the rack and pinion
