Question about 1999 Buick Century

3 Answers

99 Buick Century Custom; Dash lights stopped working.

I cannot see my speedometer at night, cannot see what gear I am in day or night. All of the system lights light up just fine: low fuel, low washer fluid, change oil soon, Someone said it might be the dimmer switch. That is a $135.00 part. I was hoping it could be something simple and less expensive.

No, they do not. My car is set up so that any time I start my car the headlights are on day or night. The radio lights come on when I turn the ignition switch off.

  • ra7104nn Mar 12, 2009

    That is correct.

  • ra7104nn Mar 12, 2009

    Thanks, I'll check back tomorrow.

  • ra7104nn Mar 13, 2009

    No I do not.

Please send the wiring diagram to me. Thanks

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

I can't see the odometer day or night or the gear selction PRNDL lights night or day. My speedometer works fine and is illuminated at night. I have read on later model Buicks that the odometer/gear selection module will have to be replaced. Is this correct?

The problem is with a set of resistors on the back of the instrument cluster. If you remove the trim panel in front of the cluster, there are four screws holding the cluster in. Remove the four screws and remove the cluster. Unplug it from the wire harness and flip it over. Unclip the back black plastic cover. Pull the printed circuit board straight out. Now, flip the board over and look on the top right quadrant just to the left of the trip odometer button. You will see up to four small cylindrical resistors. There should be four, but the solder on these seems to give out and they fall off the board. How I fixed mine was to go to Radio Shack and get 4 1/2Watt 150Ohm resistors and solder them in place of the four lousy ones. Reading the old ones, they ran from 127Ohm, to 154Ohm. Checking on other posts, I have seen that they are supposed to be 125Ohm, but either way, the 150Ohm was the closest I could get and they worked perfectly.

I'll look up the circuit and check, but the dimmer switch is possible. I'll post tomorrow.

Do you own a test light?

  • Clint Smock
    Clint Smock Mar 14, 2009

In order to test this you will need one, you can pick one up at a parts store for about 5 dollars. I can also send you a wiring diagram or walk you through the test procedure.

there is a regulator for the display brightness, you may have it turn'd down or it has stopped working;. it controls the brightness at which the dash lights are. usually has a speedo sign on it. goes up and down. it works with the main light and is conecter to them on the same lighting board if it has gone then a new light swtch control switch will be needed.

This may sound crazy to you. Check the fuse that controls the speedometer, cruise control and interior dome light. My 93 f150 battery was going dead every night. One morning I noticed the dome light inside was still on. I couldn't get it to go off so I pulled the fuse that is under the dash on the driver side. Light went out and so did speedometer. When I drove it later that day it wouldn't shift from low until I let off the gas. Then it would shift around between gears for no apparent reason. It took me a day of two to put 2 and 2 together. When I put the fuse back in, the speedometer started working and it started shifting normally. I finally took the bulb out of the dome light and now all is well.On the 93 f150 the speedometer is electronically linked to the transmission shifting points. You may have other fuses that are linked to your transmission.
