Question about 1999 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Overhead light, map lights, door chime, and aftermarket radio all stopped working at the same time.

They first worked when I started the vehicle, and they slowly faded out and stopped all together. All fuses are intact, and secured tightly. What would cause this sort of problem?

Check the battery voltage, if it is below spec, replace the battery, and most likely all of the symptoms will go away.

Same thing happened to me.
You will have to take it to the shop and have a dealer fix it.
It is what they call the "cluster" up by the firewall behind the engine that controls all the functions of the car.

My aftermarket radio is not working in my 2005 Chevy equinox. Do anyone know why? It's a new radio and all of the wires are connected properly. The chimes stopped working as well. Fuse are new as well

The chimes work through the factory radio , come out driver door speaker . There is a interface module you need to hook up on GM vehicles so aftermarket radios will work . With these newer vehicles your better off taking to someone or place that does this on a daily basis . Does it start an run ? If it does i'm surprised , factory radio is also hooked to the vehicle serial data network , class 2 . Suggest you google that .

Battery positive voltage is provided to the radio from the Radio (15A) fuse in the fuse block. The radio is grounded through a braided cable case ground. The radio is enabled/disabled by Class 2 messages from the body control module (BCM). The entertainment system on this vehicle is configured with a base and uplevel system. The base and uplevel systems contain a radio, antenna, speakers, and on some vehicles an audio amplifier.

The audible warnings alert the driver of a system concern or a critical vehicle condition. The radio generates the audible warnings. The BCM receives audible warning requests via the class 2 serial data line or the controller area network (CAN) data line. If the BCM receives multiple audible warning requests, the warning with the highest priority sounds first. The following lists the audible warning priority and the pulse rate:
Fast rate chime--200 pulses per minute
Medium rate chime--150 pulses per minute
Slow rate chime--50 pulses per minute
Single chime

A service manual will provide a series of tests that may help troubleshooting steps. But, since this sounds intermittent then it may be a connection problem. Try a visual inspection looking for loose connections.

Reset passlock code

Is your Impala a 2000, 2001, or 2002? This seems to be a common problem in those model years...much like its predecessor the GM VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). While the VATS had a permanent (albeit unapproved) solution, no suck workaround appears to be available for the Passlock system. Some websites offer a correction "module" that looks to be a hit-or-miss solution. I did find the following procedure on a forum, and it seems to be reliable. Here goes:
If your car has been sitting while you were at work or home or in the store, and you are coming out to leave, follow steps 1-6.

If you just had the SECURITY SYSTEM lock you out of the ignition system, you will have to wait the 10 minutes for it to reset and allow the ignition control module to interact with the system. Once the 10 minutes have passed from the ACTIVE SECURITY STATUS, follow steps 1-6. Do not try to shortcut this as it wont work.

If it is raining, you can close your door, just not all the way. Close it all the way and open the door latch without pushing the door open. This will keep you dry.

+++++STEPS+++++ 1.) OPEN YOUR DRIVERS DOOR AND SIT DOWN. 2.) PLACE KEY IN IGNITION, WAIT FOR CHIME. (3 seconds is what I usually wait) 3.) TURN IGNITION 1 CLICK RIGHT (TO THE ACC POSITION) AND STOP! Do not continue to ON and START yet. WAIT ATLEAST 5 SECONDS 4.) AFTER 5 seconds has passed, TURN KEY TO ON and STOP, DO NOT CONTINUE TO START YET! 5.) WAIT AND WATCH. With your drivers door open, here is what you will see and hear = Your notification will signal DOOR ADJAR, then the BATTERY light, then the SECURITY light, during which you will hear the chime sound as if you just started the car. 6.) AFTER YOU SEE THE SECURITY light switch back to DOOR ADJAR or Battery, and after the CHIME has stopped, you can turn the key to start and voila!

It has worked every time for me and 5 of my friends. This whole process takes about 20-30 seconds, but it sure as hell beats 30 minutes, as GM refuses to compensate my time lost to their vehicle\'s design flaws.

RECAP: 1.) Open driver door, sit down 2.) Insert key in ignition, wait for chime 3.) Once chime starts wait 3 seconds 4.) Turn key to ACC position WAIT atleast 5 seconds 5.) After 5 seconds turn key to the ON postion and wait for the security light to switch back to Battery or DOOR adjar, and the chime to stop (Do not try to START if the chime is still sounding) 6.) Once chime stops and Security light has passed, You may now complete the turn to START and it will start.

Note: This is not a permanent workaround, but it will buy you some time, I can almost guarantee it will work for most if not all people, almost all the time.

the radio runs the door chimes as well as a number of other components. dash lights things liketha so if your stereo is not working thats why your door chimes are not either. I would start with fuses then look to getting a new stereo only thing ir a n aftermarket harness for that car runs about $150 bucks

The door sensor needs adjusting. It may be loose.
Loosen the lock nut on the pushbutton sensor in the door frame.
Unscrew the sensor a little and re-tighten the lock nut.

It wont mess up the ECM but you'll most probably lose the door chime and the lights on chime. They both work through the factory radio, chiming through the left speaker.
