Question about 1988 Dodge Ram Wagon

3 Answers

Gear selector doesn't put car in gear.

I bought an 88 Dodge Ram Wagon about three hours from my house and drove it home no problem. In the morning, the van started up fine but when I shifted into drive it wouldn't move forward. (The speedometer stays at zero.)
I called the guy I bought the van from and he said I should let the engine warm up the transmission and maybe punch the pedal down all the way when in gear to get it moving. I tried this and it didn't work at first and then suddenly I felt it go into gear and it drove away no problem after that. It drove completely normally like it had before.
This morning I tried that again and nothing happened except for very, very faint and powerless forward motion, able to be stopped by the smallest incline and hard to get going again after a stop sign. I noticed that when I use the gear selector it doesn't make a sound but when it does finally decide to inch forward I feel a 'slight' lurch forward from the gear starting to kick in. The transmission is supposedly new from 15,000 miles ago (along with the engine.) did I get ripped off or is it just maybe the gear selector connection? Thanks!

The gear shifter still feels tight and normal, it just can't "feel" it getting into gear when I put it in drive.

I would say you got taken. The guy obviously new it had a problem when you talked with him about it the day after. Which means he new it when he sold it to you. Sounds like transmission is going out or at the least the bands need to be serviced along with the rest of the transmission. If it was rebuilt see if you can get the paper work. If you can not chances are it was not.

Check transmission fluid see if it is full & rub some through your index finger & thumb be careful if it has metal in it could cut your finger or thumb. Smell your finger see if it smells & looks burnt.
Also if it is to clean could mean it was changed in case someone was to check it before buying it.

Try shifting it manually start in L1 see if it works here if it does could be less expensive to fix.
Either way you have a problem that will cost you if you cannot take it back.

Wow Sorry! Hang in there please rate. Good Luck!

fix it by using a coat hanger.Wrap it tightly around the front plastic cable shield in front of cable bracket on transmission then loop it around to back shield, pulling the both sides together as much as possible.
that simple repair .What happens is the outer shifter cable shield separates at the metal bracket on left front of tranny and won't let your inside cable shift the gears.Hope this helps you.

No, your truck is not shifting out of second gear when it is warm. If your check engine light is on, scan it for codes. The bands on the transmission need to be adjusted, they can be adjusted from the outside on a dodge. Inspect your transmission fluid, it it's discolored or smells burnt, have it flushed and new filter installed. Use only ATF+4 fluid. I hope this helps.

Sounds like low automatic transmission fluid. Have you checked the fluid level. Have you noticed it leaving spots where it's parked?
We used to have an Audi A4 wagon and the transmission was always reliable for us. We always kept it well serviced. Audi's (like all high performance cars) need very regular service and attention to be kept going well.

No not at all. The problem may be with the anti-theft system. Sometimes in older cars, especially Dodges', the theft system starts to act up even though you put the key in the ignition. You may want to have it checked out at the dealership, shouldn't cost that much just to have it looked at.
