I'm third owner, bought it with 96000 miles on, currently 120000 miles. Sometimes my Volvo V40 engine doesn't start - happens irregularly. I turn the ignition on - there is no crancking. Llights on the dashboard are on, gearshift in parking position (even if I move it to reasure that parking position is engaged), tried to start when in neutral, keep pumping the throtlle - same result. I can try to start the engine dozen times in the row - no cranking. After 5-10min (or 1 hr) car starts like there was never a problem. It happens only during the warm start, usually after short stop, like the engine is too hot and somehow electrical connection is lost. Had battery replaced, starter replaced, fuses checked, master relay checked - didn't help.
Immbilizer? - never had immobilaizer lamp lit
Any clue? I'm about to get rid of this car but invested so much in it....
SADLY MOST OLD VOLVO'S SUFFER FROM A PLETHORA OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS...THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T SEE MANY OF THEM. SOUNDS LIKE A INTERMITTENT GROUND CONNECTION. THE WAY TO SLOVE IT IS TO SEE OF VOLTAGE IS GETTING TO THE STARTING CIRCUIT DURING THE PROBLEM...IS THERE A BRAKE PEDAL LOCK OUT SWITCH?

Talk to the person you bought it from. Ask if it happened to them. YOu don't describe what is not working. Is the starter turning the engine over? Is there spark? Is there gas? Etc
needs a throttle body cleanin--idle air motor maybe aging--get car scanned soon--mite also hav a vacuum leak--get a repair manual for troublshoot procedures
Do it at 60,000 miles, it is cheaper than a damaged engine-Volvo had different recommendations:
All models - 1999MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 80,000 miles or 8 years.
1,6/1,8/2,0 - 2000-01MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
1,9T/2,0T - 2000MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
66,000 miles/6 years.
138,000 miles/12 years.
210,000 miles/18 years.
2,0T - 2001MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
All models - 2002MY : Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 96,000 miles or 8 years.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
If you're asking what the mileage should be between oil changes don't go by what the owner's manual tells you, it's best to change the oil and filter at least every 3 to 4 thousand miles miles as it's a cheap insurance to make your engine last longer with minimal sludge build up in the engine.
Here's how to set the clock on a 2004 Volvo V40. Rotate the odometer stem to the right or to the left and hold it without pushing it in. The clock will start to move slowly then speed up. This seems to have been left out of the owners manual. Hope it helps.
Could have many causes, but a good start could be to have the oxygen sensor voltage output checked.(In exhaust system) This would explain why mixture/ variable idle speed occurs.
If the car shakes and stalls at lights stop signs etc. I would check the egr ( exhaust recirculator valve) first this valve should open when in driving mode and close immediately when engine comes back to idle. to check this find the valve on the intake manifold ( looks like a mushroom) remove vaccuum line and plug hose drive the car and see if it fixes the problem. If it does get one from local parts store. Most brands such as standard are universal and come with baffles that must be installed. do not leave the valve disconnected the engine will "ping" when driving forcing you to buy higher octane gas. It is also illegal to remove this unit for emission reasons.
turn the lights off at the headlamp switch, hold the high beam flash stalk on and turn the light switch all the way on and then all the way off again. This toggles the DRL on my 2004 V40.
cannot remember if you have to have the ignition on (engine not running) or engine off.
I'm not sure..., if yes what would it have to do with the problem?
