on most of the cars us use a special spanner tool that resembles a bent screwdriver. you pull the plastic cap out from the back of the drum and then just turn the ajustment wheel till you feal it tighten up a litle. Remember to put the plastic cap back on. Also a old trick most people don't know about is put the car in reverse in a parking lot, and slam on the brakes. most cars have a auto ajustment that they never use.

Are the parking brakes on, or they won't go on? The cable from the front e-brake pedal back to the rear wheels has probably seized due to corrosion. Soak it over several days w/ wd-40 or some type of penetrating oil and it may loosen up the cable. If u have 4 wheel disk, just pull off rear tires for access to cable connection to brake pads. Use penetrating oil at any points where cable attaches to rear pads (don't get any on the pads ) good luck countrycurt0

Make sure the parking brake is not on, and that the brake adjuster is screw in all the way, adjust brakes after brake drum is on, from the back side on the backing plate, there will be a slot for adjustment, or you might have to knock out the tab, to be able to adjust brakes.

1996 ford exsplorer parking brake adjusment, do i need a special tool it has disc brakes


No special tool needed, the adjustment is on the inside of the back wheel drums, there is a little inspection hole usually plugged with a rubber grommet, remove the grommet and use a flat screwdriver to adjust the brake shoes, you might need a torch to get you started, I changed my brake shoes about two weeks ago on my 1996 ford explorer, I had no handbrake and when I stripped the back drums to get to the brake shoes it was virtually metal on metal, no brake shoe left at all. let me know if this helps, cheers Rockie

if parking brake is released
ther would be a build up of rust between shoes and internal drum edged
try to back up internal shoes and chip away rusted edged then they should come off

Can't get the back brake drums on after shoe replacement. 1999 Ford Contour


You will need to loosen the bleeder valve and push in on both sides of the brake pistons that hold the shoes apart. This will give you enough clearance. Also measure along outside edges to make sure the brake shoes are centered in the opening and make sure nobody applied the parking break after the procedure was started. Make sure to tighten bleeder valve afterwards, have someone press on brake and release brake fluidd through hose into clean brake fluid covered hose end in a bottle to bleed the brakes and keep doing this cycle until all bubbles are gone or pedal will be soft. You can read up online about bleeding brakes for tips and full instructions.

Brake shoe removel:

Depress and turn the retainers for the hold-down springs and pins to remove them from each shoe. Slide the brake shoe assembly--including the shoes and springs--down so you can disengage the top ends of the shoes from the cylinder and tilt them to lift them past the retaining plate.

Unhook the lower retracting spring from the front brake shoe to disconnect it. Spread the shoes apart at the bottom to remove the adjusting screw, the screw's retracting spring and the adjuster lever. Remove the front brake shoe.

Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.

Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.
  • Step 4 Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.
  • Step 5 Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.

    Changing the brake pads


    • Brake linings that are worn to within 1/32 inch (0.79 mm) of a rivet head or that have been contaminated with brake fluid, grease, or oil must be replaced.

    • Failure to replace worn linings results in a scored drum. When it is necessary to replace brake shoes, they must also be replaced on the wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle. Inspect brake shoes for distortion, cracks, or looseness. If these conditions exist, the shoe must be discarded.
    • Do not let brake fluid, oil, or grease touch the brake lining.
    • If a brake lining kit is used to replace the linings, follow the instructions in the kit and install all the parts provided.
    • The two general methods of attaching the linings to the brake shoes are bonding and riveting.
    • The bonded linings are fastened with a special adhesive to the shoe, clamped in place, then cured in an oven. Instead of using an adhesive, some linings are riveted to the shoe.
    • Riveted linings allow for better heat transfer than bonded linings.
    Drum Shoe and Brake Installation
    • Before installing the shoes, be sure to sand or stone the inner edge of the shoe to dress down any slight lining or metal nicks and burrs that could interfere with the sliding upon the support pads.
    • A support (backing) plate must be tight on its mount and not bent. Stone the shoe support pads brightly and dress down any burrs or grooves that could cause the shoes to bind or hang up.
    • Using an approved lubricant, lightly coat the support pads and the threads of servo star wheel adjusters. On rear axle parking brakes, lubricate any point of potential binding in the linkage and the cable. Do not lubricate nonservo brake adjusters other than to free a frozen adjuster with penetrating oil.

    • Reassemble the brakes in the reverse order of disassembly. Make sure all parts are in their proper locations and that both brake shoes are properly positioned in either end of the adjuster.
    • Also, both brake shoes should correctly engage the wheel cylinder pushrods and parking brake links.
    • They should be centered on the backing plate. Parking brake links and levers should be in place on the rear brakes.
    • With all of the parts in place, replace the brake drum.

    1. Raise and support vehicle
    2. remove wheel
    3. check to be sure parking brake is released
    4. remove brake drum
    5. remove brake shoe hold-down springs
    6. disconnect the parking brake cable
    7. Remove the lower retracting spring.
    8. disconnect shoes from the anchor block
    9. disconnect the shoes from the wheel cylinder
    10. Remove the upper retracting spring.
    11. Remove the primary shoe from the strut and brake shoe adjuster.
    A- Rotate the auto-adjuster counterclockwise.
    B- Remove the primary shoe.
    12. Disconnect the secondary shoe from the strut support.
    13. Remove the parking brake return spring.
    14 Reverse order to install

    Cannot remove rear brake drums


    You need to back off the adjusters on the rear shoes to allow the worn drum to pass over the brake shoes.
    A worn drum will have a unworn drum section on its outer edge where the brake shoes don't normally rub.
    This must unworn ring must be able to pass over the brake shoes before you can get the drum off.

    Two tools should be used through the brake adjuster access hole.
    One small diameter blade screwdriver can be used to push the self adjuster lever away from the notched adjuster nut, while a second flat bladed tool is used to lever the adjuster nut, rotating it so as to back off brake shoe expander adjustment.

    The rear drum brakes:
    • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
    • Are a single-anchor type.
    • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
    • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
    • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
    • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
    When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
    The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
