Question about 2006 Chevrolet Impala
The shifter is located between the seats. You need to push a button on the stick to shift it into a new gear. I went into the store, came out and suddenly the button can't be pressed down anymore so I am stuck in park.
I read around that it has something to do with my shift solenoid, but i have no idea how to get to it or where exactly it is. If I had it taken to a garage how much would it cost to fix one? Can I fix it on my own? If so please be detailed in the explanation.
You should be able to see a box type component on the backside of your brake pedal. When you step on the brake it sends a current to the computer telling it your on the brake and its ok to shift. Also known as shift lock control. You should also be equipped with an override on side of shifter, Maybe a small button to push or slide or even remove to reveal a small white button. Push it in and shift. Good luck.

Possibly just a fuse

There is a lock pin located on the back side of the actual shifter. If it comes loose the shifer will move up and will lock, and not allow you to shift. Just jiggle the shifter and force the pin back in place with a screwdriver. Easy 2 minute solution.

The problem may not be that complicated. My car wouldn't shift into park and I figured out the keyless entry and/or alarm was messed up. Hit the unlock button 2x on the remote to unlock all four doors and then try it.
