2006 Pontiac Montana rear brake lights and signal lights work but no tail lights. I checked the fuses and replaced them and all of them blew. Where do I start now?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2009

you will probably need to replace the taillight pigtail connector (6 pin) if you take your taillight assy out and unplug the connector you will probably find that the center black wire(ground) has shorted out and the connector melted at the black wire. the plastic connector can't take the heat generated over time. this is the ground for all rear lights and is easily overloaded (bad design) you will need to check both sides. my tran sport was burned on both sides. planning to replace pigtail and find a way to run a jumper around the connector also to get a more positive ground.
    hope this helps.

Check the ground in the fuse link also take out the rear tail light lens and make sure you don't have a broken or damage wire on the socket itself

Where is back left signal fuse located

I will assume your left tail light is not working and its most likely not a fuse since the right one is probably working (assuming). You probably have a cracked circuit board on the left side. You will need to replace the left side tail light lens. You can get one at the wreckers for about $30-45 dollars. Its easy to change

I have no break lights or turn signals

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

For turn signal not working it can be faulty turn signal switch or its issue with wiring:----

Tail lights don"t work

This is a common problem

see the final post by "yzer" for the solution:

http://www.fixya.com/cars/t870653-brake_lights_quit_working

or
Google:

Montana tail light pigtail

and you'll find numerous posts on various forums about this issue.
Sometimes its the tail lights, sometimes the brake lights or turn signal lights.

The fix involves replacing the pigtail wiring harness and perhaps, the tail light circuit boards.

My 2003 Pontiac Vibe tail lights do not work. The brake lights work. I checked the tail fuse. Turn signals work also. Why no tail lights?

Your turn signal lights and brake lights are the same lights . Question : do the front parking lights work ? The front and rear running lights or parking lights are all on the same circuit and fuse . If the front lights work , and the rear lights don't , make sure the bulbs are good first . If OK , I would suspect the problem is either a bad ground in the rear taillight wiring harness or a bad connection in the rear taillight connector Itself .

Brake lights quit working

Tail lights acting insane?

We had the same issue with our 2000 Pontiac Montana. Brake lights, turn signal lights, running lights, back-up lights and emergency flasher didn’t work at all or operated at random. The cause: poorly designed aluminum contacts on the tail light circuit board and wiring harness connector arced over and disintegrated with normal use.

Pull the tail lamp assembly, remove the electrical connector and look for burned contacts on the connector plug and the connector socket (they call this long plastic piece with the socket the circuit board: it includes the four bulb sockets. Replace the circuit board and the wiring connector.

You can DIY this job with basic auto mechanical/electrical skills and tools. The two circuit boards and the two connectors set me back $230 (2009 cost) for new parts. The electrical contacts on the factory replacement parts are improved.

I needed a T-30 torx driver to remove the tail light assembly (you need this to change out bulbs, too), wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape and an electrical lug crimper to do the job.
