Question about 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe
Should be the black wire in the harness going into the tank.
It actually goes to a main body ground in the middle of the car.

No. If you look up the part numbers on those 2 vehicles, you will find that the fuel pump part numbers are completely different. The 2002 Cavalier is most likely equipped with an EcoTec engine which did not exist in 1997. - Totally different specifications.

A mechanic would check the sending unit and ground at the tank.
You can connect an aux ground wire to the harness if it is needed.
