Sure, you can buy a new pulley and replace the original one but, you may have bad alternator bearings that is causing this noise you are hearing. i would check this out before buying a new pulley.

SOURCE: How do you loosen the serpitine belt on a 2005 chrysler pacifica

Look for the pully that has a spring like housing. Use a wrench (five eights I think) on the pully and it will loosen the belt. Try both ways to find out which way loosens it. This is called the Tension pulley

SOURCE: where is the alternator located

The alternator is hiding under the engine cover. You must remove the engine cover if you have one. Locate the power steering fluid resevior. The alternator is right behind it.

SOURCE: 2004 chrysler pacifica replace alternator

Pull cover off top of engine. Stick 9 volt battery adapter in lighter hole to save radio and computer settings. This is optional. You can get one for less than ten dollars. Remove negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner box on left side. Take special tool or what ever will fit in the belt tensioner hole pull back and remove belt from alternator pulley. Tie belt up with a piece of string so it doesn't drop. Remove alt brackets and wires and reinstall.

What would cause black soot /smoke around alternator on 04 pacifica and then it not start with fully charged battery?

The battery gives the voltage necessary to start the vehicle, then after it is started the alternator will spin off the accessory belt and recharge the battery for the next startup. If your alternator was bad the vehicle would start but turn off shortly after driving a few miles. After making sure the battery is charge, clean the battery terminals and make sure they're tightly connected to the battery. If the engine doesnt turn over, it may be your starter. The alternator on the Pacificas arent really hard to take off since theyre located on the top,so if you're second guessing its the alternator, then just release the belt tensioner pulley and loosen the alternator bolts and have it tested at your local auto parts store. Good luck

I am installing a timing belt on a 2004 chrysler pacifica and i need help!

Click on the following: free, direct Link. It has several Diagrams including the Serpentine Belt Diagram for your 2004 Chysler Pacifica 3.5L DOHC V6. It has the Instructional and Directional Diagrams that will help you.

http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/year/2004/make/chrysler/model/pacifica/2004_chrysler_pacifica_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench (See Diagram in Link: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information questions. Feel Free to contact me at FixYa.com!
