Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

2000 GMC Jimmy will not start

I have a 2000 Jimmy that will not start. When I tried to start the next morning it just keeps turning over but will not fire off. I purchased a ingition relay, fuel pump relay and battery but after 4 days of sitting and before replacing any items it started. I went ahead and changed the items out that i bought since i had them and everything was going well. After 4 days i went to start the car to leave work and it started but not as it had been doing the 4 previous days. Normally fires right off, but seemed a little slow. Got home and again the next morning car would not start again. I have changed the fuel filter which did not fix the issue, hooked a fuel gauge up and am getting no pressure to the line in the engine, and can't hear the pump kick on when turning the key on. I pressed the valve where you hook the gauge to and bit of air spit out then steady stream of fuel, but after initial air surge not much pressure at all. I am now at a loss as I have heard so many different fixes ie. pump, computer, fuse block, oil sending unit, wire bundle.... I am to the point of it's now getting expensive, and don't really want to be changing parts to change them as these items are not the cheapest so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. thanks in advance for everything.

I checked to see if the pump was priming but when the key is turned on the pump does not prime (no sound) I was told to check the oil pressure sensor as that would stop the pump from priming. Still checking stuff but any help would be appreciated

i had what sounds like the same problem, started out that it would take a few trys turning key before jimmy would start, got to a point where it took 20-30 tries before it would start, about a week-2 weeks later. by this point i had been listening for fuel pump cause sometimes i could hear it and sometimes i could not, finally it wouldn,t start at all had fuel pump replaced and havent had a problem since that was 5-6mths ago but it wasn,t a cheap fix and i took the risk that it wasn't the problem because i didn't have a mechanic look at it.

Need to check for fuel pressure and volume. If you turn the key on and you have pressure, then you should be able to start and run. If your fuel pressure gauge has a releif hose on it, then while running, dump fuel into a jug and the engine should stay running. If the vehicle will not start but cranks over, then turn the key off and on a few times. the fuel pump will only stay on for a few seconds and cycle off. Sounds like you are losing your fuel prime from the pump to the engine. Only fix is to replace the fuel pump if you are losing your prime.

How old is the cap? Could the new one be bad? Also when it won't start do you see any sparks jumping from the coil or wires?

My 2000 gmc jimmy will not start. It will turn

Have you hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to the test port on the rear of the intake, drivers side. You can get a fuel pressure tester for about 40 dollars at a part store. It is a real good tool to have in your toolbox. If your Jimmy can't build 55 psi, it won't start.

The oil presure switch does have some bearing on the problem but my suggestion is to change the coil. I had a the same problem with an astro van. I changed everything that you have described and it fixed the problem just for a little while and then all of a sudden did it again. I changed the coild and the cold start swithch and never had the problem again.
