Re: 1990 Chevy Calavier speedometer works only some of...
Either the gauge is toast...or more than likely, your cable is having problems at the tranny. Check for damage to the cable at the transmission housing. And, if you have speed ratio attachment where the cable goes into the tranny....that might be going bad.

unscrew the cable from the transmission. if you can`t unscrew it,unbolt the lock bolt that holds the little bar which keeps the speedometer cable in place and remove the speedometer driven gear assembly from the transmission. the gear is plastic and is what the cable is driven by.
In 1990 most Automatics had a cable driven speedo. If not...were it is connected to the trani there is 1 bolt holding in the electric speedo unit. Check the connection and or replace the speed sensor that the bolt is holding in
if your car has an electric transducer for the speedo the contacts may be getting moisture on the them and not sending any impulse to your speedo
could not see a cable driven speedo having that sort of a problem
hope this helps
1.remove speedometer driven gear
2. remove drain plug, and drain oil
3. fill trans, check fluid by speedometer gear, just above gear see F & L, oil level is between F & L
4. install speedometer driven gear
LOL! SIMPLE STUFF! FIRST FIGURE OUT IF YOUR CAR HAS AN ELECTRIC SPEEDOMETER OR CABLE DRIVEN ONE. THE ODOMETER IS USUALLY PART OF THE SPEEDOMETER SO IF THE CABLE IS BUSTED OR THE ELECTRICAL CURRENT TO IT HAS FAILED? IT WON'T WORK AT ALL. I BELIEVE A 1990 HAS A CABLE DRIVEN ONE SO JUST TRY REPLACEING THAT CABLE FIRST. U CAN GET IT AT ADVANCED OR AUTOZONE OR A DEALER IF U WANNA PAY OUT THE NOSE.....UR CHOICE.
speedometer is electronically driven usual cause is coil in spedo itself u would have to replace , pull panel and test voltage if power bad spedo, info on how to do chiltons book at most any parts store
This is most likely not a speed sensor problem, I see this a lot on 03-05 Cavalier instrument clusters and it's always the same. It's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board and it can be fixed. Check out this page for more about how to get it fixed - cavalier speedometer fix
