SOURCE: 05 tacoma tailgate latch stuck

I had the same problem. I figure that dirt/rust may have accumulated inside the latching mechanism. I was able to fix it using the following steps.
1 - Remove the plastic cap that covers the top of the gate.
2 - Remove as many of the remaining torx bolts from the inside cover (you will need to do this to get inside the gate).
3 - Next, try and get some WD40 on/in the latch mechanism.
4 - Using a large screwdriver, you will need to pry the lever attached to the cable in order to release the latch.

Not a pretty process but it seemed to work. I give the latches a good lubrication frequently now, until I get around to replacing them.

SOURCE: my 08 toyota tacoma tailgate latch is jammed and

Some gravel has gone down the latch holes on each side. Take the tailgate out and place it on something that won't scratch it like an old blanket. Turn it upside down each way and gently tape on it with your hand to dislodge the gravel while operating the latch.

Welcome to Fixya

Remove the screws holding it together, then pulled it open as much as you could from the middle and hold it with a piece of 4x6 so I could access the left side, with a small screw driver, compared the both sides, to see what was the difference. you might need to do it few times. Once you manage to get it out. clean it, oil it if possible. Put it back then test again.

Thank you for using FIxya!

SOURCE: 2001 Toyota Sienna r.h. sliding door ''rear latch switch'' location

To start, the noun "''rear latch switch'' is incorrect. It's actually called "Slide Door Lock". It's located on page BO-20 of the Toyota Repair Manual for the 2001 Sienna. There are two door locks on one sliding door. One in the front and one in the rear. Obviously, you want the one in the rear. The location for the "Slide Door Lock" (which also contains an electric switch) is in the rear of the sliding door located mid way up door. You can see (sliding door opened from the back) it without dissembling the door. And, the lock is made up of plastic (dirty white in color).

It depends on the actual problem. A body shop may be able to use a tool to go down thru the window sill to unlock the latch. If the latch is damaged, you may have to cut into the door to remove it.

Try putting the key in the driver door lock and turning from lock to unlock. That should dissable the factory alarm system. You may have to do it a few times before it works.

Almost all vehicle numbers are on the door or on the car where the door latches when it shuts open the door and you should be able to find the specs. there is also more info under the hood. open hood and look right on the front. there will b engine specs and belt diagram.
