a balljoint removal tool is definately the proper way to remove the ball joints. harbour freight does carry them but there not the best tool provider. also if the ones your replacing aren't greaseable your better off putting greaseable fittings will defineatly make a difference.

'dont remember any. Be sure you have the joint square with the knuckle when installing... If it cocks to one side, it will jam. take care not to damage the boot. When using fork, it can damage stuff . I refrain from using it as much as possible, using a good sized hammer and giving a shot on the side of pin recievers (like where tie rod end goes through arm on knuckle) this saves tearing tie rod end boot. When in doubt get a manual...any more questions, ask!!

Not hard, you'll need a special socket to get the axle nut off and getting the bearing out of the spindle is usually a real chore. Since it sounds like the spindle is already out, you might be able to do it in a press.

To get the ball joints out of the spindle, drive them out with a hammer. If you need to get the ball joint out of the axle, strike the axle next to where the ball joint taper is with a large hammer. That will usually distort the axle material enough (for a split second) to let the tappered section loose.

Lower Ball Joint Inspection

  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Prior to carrying out any inspection of the ball joints inspect the wheel bearing.
  4. Have an assistant pull inward and outward on the top and the bottom tire. Mount a suitable dial indicator and measure the movement between the ball joint and the lower arm. If the movement is at or exceeds 0.03 in. (0.75 mm) install a new ball joint.

Inspect/Test/Service/Replace Removing Ball Joint Tapers from the Steering Knuckle
The ball joint is connected to the steering knuckle with a tapered connection, called a steering taper, which is also used in other steering connections.
f57-19.gif A ball joint taper. Courtesy of Moog Automotive, Inc. To remove a ball joint requires the use of a ball joint remover.
Another way of "breaking" the taper is to use a large hammer.
  • First, remove the cotter pin from the ball joint nut and loosen the nut several turns.
  • Position the vehicle so that the coil spring is pushing on the ball joint. This could require lifting the vehicle or allowing its weight to rest on the wheels.
  • Use a hammer to pound sharply on the steering knuckle on the outside of the taper. this will deform the taper and spring pressure will separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Removing the Ball Joint from the Control Arm
A ball joint can be retained by one of several methods.
f57-20.gif Three common ball joint retaining methods. Courtesy of Moog Automotive, Inc. Some ball joints are held in with rivets from the factory. The rivets are drilled and punched to remove them. Bolts and nuts are used to hold the replacement joint in place.
f57-21.gif Original equipment rivets are replaced with nuts and bolts. Courtesy of Moog Automotive, Inc. The most common method is press fit. Some manufacturers require you to replace the entire control arm assembly if a ball joint is to be replaced. In these cases, the ball joint and control arm are made as a single assembly and individual parts are not available.
If the control arm has been removed from the vehicle, a pressed-fit ball joint can be removed using a standard hydraulic press. when the control arm is still on the car, a special press set allows the removal and replacement of these ball joints. some pressed-fit ball joints have a spot weld that holds them in place. this must be carefully removed. when a replacement ball joint is installed, a snap ring often takes the place of the weld.
NOTE Be sure the grease release hole in the new ball joint's rubber boot is aimed away from the brakes.

Front ball joint with heat shield

Remove and Replace-

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the ball joint heat shield.
  5. Remove and discard the lower ball joint cotter pin.
  6. Remove the ball joint nut.
  7. Loosen, but do NOT remove, the stabilizer shaft bushing assembly bolts.
  8. Separate the ball joint from the strut/knuckle assembly using ball joint/tie rod puller J-35917 or equivalent.
Do NOT damage the halfshaft boots when drilling out the ball joint rivets.
  1. Drill out the rivets retaining the ball joint to the knuckle strut assembly and remove the ball joint from the knuckle. Use a 1/8 in. drill bit. Refer to the instructions in the ball joint replacement kit.
To install:
  1. Position the lower ball joint in the strut/knuckle assembly.
  2. Install the four ball joint bolts and nuts, as shown in the ball joint kit and tighten to specifications.
  3. Install the ball joint-to-lower control arm. Install a new ball joint-to-lower control arm nut.
  4. Tighten the stabilizer shaft bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  5. For 1988-91 vehicles, tighten the ball joint-to-lower control arm nut 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus at least an additional 90° (11/2flats), plus enough to align the cotter pin hole. Do NOT overtighten.
  6. For 1992-96 vehicles, tighten the lower ball joint nut to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm). Tighten to align the next slot in the nut with the cotter pin hole in the stud. Do NOT tighten more than 60° (1 flat) to align with the hole.
  7. Install a new cotter pin.
  8. Position the ball joint heat shield and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  9. Install the front wheel and tire assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper suspension operation

How to remove upper/ lower ball joints on 1990 GMC Suburban 4x4

hit the steering knuckle where the ball joint shaft goes through it while u have the wedge/pickle fork inserted, u do this on the round side of the knuckle, this is what is called a "Morse Taper" hitting it distorts the hole a little and that lets the joint pop free. You need at least a 5 pound ball pen for this to work..

Suburban front tire squeek

squeaks in the front end can be any one of the suspension components....however with gm trucks it has been my experience that its probably a ball joint.........GET IT CHECKED!!!!!!!.......if the ball joint breaks the wheel will flop in the wheel well and can cause severe damage to your other suspension components as well as body damage.(can be very expensive) if you are traveling at a fast speed you may lose control and possibly crash! But most of the time a bad ball joint will break when you are going into a driveway or parking lot.
hope this helps........Good Luck!
