Question about 1997 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Check Engine light on!!!!!

I replaced the muffler and the cat on my '97 honda accord less then a year ago, and now the check engine light is back on! I hooked a scan tool to see what the problem was and it said gave me a code saying it was the cat. system. Could there be something wrong with the cat or muffler again? or could it be an 02 sensor? I been driving the car for about 4 months with check engine light on with no problems.

Dont mean to question your intelligence on cars or nuttin but how sure are you? is it because i been riding it for that period of time without any problems? or due to the cat and muffler being changed already? if it is the 02 sensor which one will i need to change? the one connected to the exhaust manifold or the cat? thanks for all your help man! greatly appreciates it!

Its the O2 sensor for sure. normally, its good practice to change the sensor when changing out the muffler and cat system. doing it all together will prevent the sensor from faulting.

It is best to change both sensors. due to the exchange of both the muffler and cat systems, the sensors will need to be replaced as well. normally, we swap all at once to prevent this type of sensory confusion.

Uhhhh... it's under the truck... it's part of the exhaust system. You can buy one for $180-$220 from many online dealers like RockAuto

.Here's some reading about replacement catalytic converters and the law.Enjoy.

Remember that cats are made up of precious metals inside-the cheaper ones are cheaper because they are use less of the expensive materials, and your check engine light WILL come on after a short period of time with a cheap cat.

Found direct fit cats,

Alternate brand: Magnaflow 53004ca cats for the 2 upfront and used a 94006 for the center one just before the muffler.
They fit perfect and work just fine and are way cheaper than stock.
No check engine lights or anything as someone suggested, LOL! People always with doom and gloom! I never had to change an O2 sensors and the truck is running fine.

1997 honda accord loud buzz near engine when accelerator pressed?

Sounds like either: 1) A exhaust heatshield is loose. They're simply thin metal guards around your muffler/CATS. If you find one loose, remove it or have it welded back on. 2) Broken motor mount. This is serious and requires pulling the engine from the car. If a motor mount is broken, the engine wont sit right and cause multiple vibrations. Hope this helped!

Check engine light comes on because engine computer has detected a fault. It could be anything, from a cheap sensor to an important component out of specifications, to a service reminder. Most shops (not necessarily Honda dealers, ) have the diagnostic equipment to hook it up to your car and tell you what is wrong, before fixing anything. Usual rates for this diagnostic is below $100, including quote for repair.

2000 Cavalier catalytic converter was stolen/check engine light

The check engine light is probably indicating a catalytic converter malfunction the Oxygen sensor that is located after the cat tells the computer if the cat is functioning properly it is possible the wire has been broken or damaged. To see if the cat is there jack up the car and look under the passenger and driver area of the car follow the exhaust pipe from the front back the first thing the pipe comes to should be the cat it looks like a muffler with a wire going to a sensor after toward the back side of it, I doubt they never installed one but I guess it is possible.

Failed emission NOx on a 93 Honda accord ex its papes the 25/25 test but not the 50/50 test. what is wrong how do I fix this? check engine light stays on?

The only thing I can think of checking would be the EGR valve, a faulty cat converter or faulty o2 sensor. Converter shouldn't set off check engine light though unless it is clogged causing too much back pressure, most likely EGR Valve.

Check engine light but no fault codes

First:
Take the Accent to AutoZone. They will scan the code (free) and give you a print-out with a "general" explanation (free). They can also reset it properly.

Next:
Let us know the codes and a summary of the print-out. We will advise you.

Answers to your questions:
The sensors at the cat are O2 (Oxygen) sensors.
Problem could be the cat or could be a faulty sensor. My money is on the O2 sensor.

Could be lots of things, like sticky fuel injector...
Don't change the catalytic convertor just yet.
My opinion is that the "shop" doesn't really know and is hoping that replacing the cat will fix it all (my opinion).

If you eventually change out the cat, go to a local muffler shop, not a national chain. They will do the same job for a lot less and not try to sell you other stuff.
