Question about 1986 Ford F 250

Glow plug light

I just bought an 86 f250 2w drive and I LOVE MY TRUCK but as i drive or it idles the glow plug light comes on once in a while and the engine lags for a second and then goes back off. I bought a new Plug relay but the one on the truck was already brand new. i want to fix it myself, anyone got any ideas as to what else might cause it. the truck runs fine except that lag when the light comes on and as long as it's plugged in she starts good too.

Thanks very much, we will check these out we just got the truck a week or so ago, so we are still in the process of trial and error before we have to spend to get it fixed...

The glow plugs heat up your combustion chamber when it is cold and it sounds like your coolant temp sensor is acting up saying that your engine is cold when it is not. Either that, or somewhere in between there is a fault in the wiring giving signals when it shouldn't. The lag is only because your glowplugs draw and immense amount of juice whenever they kick on an that puts a monster load on your alternator. Check your wiring to and from your plugs, your O2 sensor if you have one and any temp sensors you have. Do it quick though because if this problem persists you are going to start burning through alternators and belts- not just glow plugs.

Sounds like your ignition switch might be worn and need replaced. It is pretty common for the glow plugs to draw quite a few amps. they just aren't usually on when the truck is running.

Why does my rodeo diesel 2.8l 99 model when cold starts at accessories point & glow plug light stays on longer?

sounds as though the cylinder,s etc are a bit clogged up, try some diesel fuel addative,as with all diesel engines if they do not get long and regular journeys the glow plugs, injectors etc get clogged ,as the engine does not get hot enough to burn these deposits off on short stop start types of journey's . you are possibly looking at replacing the glow plugs but give the addative a try and if possible take for a long drive 2-3 hours at steady highish speed , ok to repeat the addative and long drive once more ,if no improvement will need to go into the repair shop to have the glow plugs seen to at the very least , good luck

1986 ford f350 won't start

The solenoid click sounds very strong, implying that you have a charged battery and the ignition circuit is functioning out to the solenoid. Suspect an issue with the starter motor. Is the starter motor installed and connected properly?

1983 Chevy Silverado, Glow plug light will not come on, Truck will turn over but not start, fuse panel has no blown fuses, I suspect the Glow Plug Relat but I don't know how to verify it is bad.

With most relays, you have 4 wires. One is power to the component the relay controls, one is a ground to the relay magnet, one is power to the magnet, and the fourth goes to the component, in this case the glow plugs. The ground usually comes from the computer.
With the key on you should have power to two terminals and you would jumper the hot terminal to the glow plug terminal. Or use a test light or meter to check for power on the glow plug circuit.

Glow plug light

Believe it or not, the glow plug light will only appear when the ambient temperature is low enough for the glow plugs to require heating. I did not believe this when I bought my truck and assumed there was something wrong with it, however the first frost of winter, the light came on!

86 Ford truck WONT start

Sounds like bad advice. If your glow plugs are bad, the last thing you want to do is try to start it. Remember, diesel engines use these glow plugs like coils in a toaster. Since diesel is harder to burn than gasoline, the glow plugs heat up to a combustible temperature, allowing the diesel to ignite and your vehicle to start. I don't know the reprocussions of trying to start it without them working...but it can't be good.

Wont start sometimes, rough idle.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. If your car has a lot of miles (200k miles is pretty common), then it's likely.

Once something breaks loose in the ignition switch, well basically you got lil pieces of metal floating around making contact where they shouldn't, which create the scenerios you're talking about.

The glow plug light may or may not be related. But you won't know til you get that first problem fixed.

If the rough idle eventually smooths up after it warms up, then yes, you probably need to look at the glow plugs and/or glow plug relay.
