May just need lube. Follow it down to transmission and observe where rotating on side or top. That needs to return on its own fully, after pedal backs off. May take a while, but lube good and keep trying to move it more and more as you go, until it moves real free.

Short of a leaking vacuum line, damaged shift cable or linkage, or a band adjustment, there are no cheap or easy fixes. Drop the transmission pan and look for chunks of metal from the bands or bits of fibrous clutch material. Sooty looking deposits are normal. If you see any chunks, get ready to replace the transmission. Considering that the van is 20 years old, If it is a high mileage vehicle and/or very rusty, you might want to consider just scrapping it, since a rebuilt transmission will run you about $1300, and you don't want to get into a position of having way more money invested in the vehicle than it is worth.

when u press the gas pedal to go this opens the throttle valve, the idle speed of your engine is computer controlled, this is done by the ISC (idle speed control) airbypass valve, these parts get full of gunk and then get a stalling problem at or near idle, clean them by doing the following, if u don't understand the instructions seek help from your friend.
, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

get the codes with scanner first, somethig is wrong in valve body, some valve, you should do a pressure test in each port in the trany, you know the plugs in the sides ok,if there is not the especific pressure some valve is not moving free or is stuck, look for speed sensors ectr,#1 scanner for codes ok.

There are electric shift solenoids onside the valve body. The modulator valve plays a part in when the shift occurs too. Have them checked out for proper operation.

Your car acts like it needs a transmission service. That's where you should start. GM cars can act like the trans is shot when all it needs is a new filter. I don't understand how the dealer could miss it, though. Get back to me and let me know.

Trans sticks in 2nd gear

"...he had to put hi foot on the gas pedal several times..." I do not understand what this means, but does it still fine? If it is then you likely had a stuck shift valve, but why is the valve stuck? Is the valve body contaminated as a result of the trans "coming apart". If it is still not shifting out of second gear then you may have a 3-4 clutch problem, which is a very common failure and requires overhaul to correct it.

the device that controls the idle speed is called the IAC, idle air control valve. It may be clogged with deposits. So you may need to do a simple cleaning. Buy a can of spray carb cleaner, clean the throttle plate and bore(use an old toothbrush). Remove and clean the IAC valve. check for cracked or disconnected vacuum hoses and fittings with the carb cleaner. spray on hose ends and elbow while the engine is running. the idle speed will change when a leak is found. doing all of this will only set you back the cost of a can of carb cleaner and some paper towels.

It won't shift 1-2 or 2-3 or both unless you let off? If it is just 1-2 it might be a band adjustment, but I'll bet you have a plugged governor solenoid screen also.
