Question about Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Starting engine My pickup will not start with the first turn of the key. You have to turn the key back and try it again and it always fires up rough. Tapping the gas seems to help, is there a problem with my fuel injector?

the timing is 180 degrees out so ignore where no 1 lead should be and rewire the HT leads to the new position for no1 cylinder. The crank timing mark should be on 10 degrees advanced. Engines are timed off the crank position so forget the cam position.
Or you can start again. Remove no 1 plug and turn the engine over until you feel compression under your finger over the plug hole. Set the timing on the crank to 10 degrees before tdc. Position the distributor so that the point of the star is directly opposite the exciter coil in the distributor. The rotor button should now be facing no 1 cylinder plug lead adjust the HT leads so that they will fire in the 1342 firing order. Start the engine and with a timing light attached to no 1 plug lead adjust the timing mark to specifications by turning the body of the distributor.

Starts some times and some times not

Have the ECU tested an a garage - I suspect a temp-sender/temp-sensor is giving a bad reading to the ecu, making starting difficult in some conditions -
When the car wont start like this you can hold the accelerator to the floor while cranking the engine, keep your foot planted while turning the key, this is a failsafe start operation - it will clear the cylinders with no fuel for a second or two then slowly increase the mixture till the engine fires, it can take 15 seconds to start. this nearly always starts an engine with "minor" sensor problems.

your problem sounds fuel related chk your fuel pressure. or simply turn key off then to on position (engine off) and see if u can hear your fuel pump run (2-3 sec) then it will turn off.

Problem getting the engine to turn over after running a while

The first thing I would do is replace the fuel filter. That is a reasonable solution and the most inexpensive. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd consider replacing the fuel pump.
A faulty fuel pump can cause erratic starting, low engine output or even leave you stranded by the side of the road.

It sounds like the pickup coil in the distributor, when it gets hot, it goes open circuit. Changing the plugs won,t help

Random misfire/rough idle/stall

Low fuel pressure due to faulty fuel pump will give misfire codes due to fuel starving conditions. Have fuel pressure tested, preferably when running bad.

Toyota Pickup 1991 4cyl 22re - Trouble starting sometimes

Sounds like the switch on the clutch pedal needs adjusted. Is the floor mat bunched up under the pedal, I've seen that. It could also be dirty ground connections. There are several. Not only the battery ground but smaller ones also. A bad ground can mean low voltage to the ECM and injectors. Does the start solenoid click. If it does may be bad battery connections on either end. If it doesn't may be bad connections in the small wires to the solenoid. The alternator could be consuming the available connections when the battery is recharged from starting then the ECM and injectors can have enough. Why it would run rough for a while. The first place to look is always the electrical connections. A lot of people have paid for new starters because of bad connections. I had a friend kept buying alternators from his trusted mechanic because somebody had removed the ground wires from his engine to the chassis. (This was before he asked me to look at it. Of course!)

1998 s-10 2.2l intermittent hard start

because you said it sounds like timing problems i may have an idea. i dont remeber if these have a distributer? but its common for the distributer on the newer GM trucks and i dont know why but its like the spark jumps around inside causing incorrect firing order when trying to start and just gets worse and worse. remove and inspect for build on on rotor and tabs on distributer.

and get back to me with problem
