Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Neon, I had the water pump, timing belt replaced at a shop. Car ran, but poorly. A friend suggested I check the cat. converter, I found it was clogged, so gutted it and reinstalled. (Has major leakage now.) I was still having issues with exhaust pressure bleeding into coolant, causing my fluid 2 blow out of resevoir. Now I have replaced the head gasket. (which was no walk in the park.) Engine runs much better now, and coolant issue is eliminated, but... Now it's smoking excessively, and tried to die on me when pulling into my driveway from test drive. I found oil dripping from the muffler. What do I need to do now??!!??

Oil coming out of muffler still have leaking head gasket.did you decked the cylinder check for warpage if not new head gasket didnt seal causing same problem. do compression test see what compression readings you are getting.

SOURCE: Excessive overheating!!!,water within oil.? Was

Sounds like a head gasket to me. If the oil is milky than the only way coolant can get into the oil is through the head gasket. Since there is also a lot of whit smoke out the exhaust coolant is getting into the combustion chamber and then getting pushed out the exhaust. Your best option might be to find a low mileage used engine. Heads gaskets can get very expensive!

SOURCE: engine coolant blows back into

it sounds like you may have air trapped in the system.there are bleeder valves to remove air.
with the engine warm & running open the bleeder valve(small screw mounted around therostat)
may be located in thero housing.bleed system until all air is out, close valve & top off system

good luck

Well I originally asked why my check engine light came on after having the timing belt, water pump, a gasket and spark plugs replaced. I did take it back to the shop. They ran a scan on it, and the...

he told you 100% correct
you didnt post the DTC code, (buy a scanner)
my guess, its the P042x codes. (bad cat family )
drive the car, not that it runs ring (your cam belt slipped was retarded , retarded cams ,puts huge fuel raw to the CAT overloading it to death. so now that the CAM is timed.
drive the snot out of the car, get that cat roasting hot.
and if there are no exhaust leaks near the cat, then it will dry out
and stop throwing lazy cat codes.
true for all cars 79\' to present. USA, with cats.

point 2, in some shops they are required to replace that cat , on suspicion (EPA laws). so be happy you didnt get $1000 bill for that.
let it bake dry , then post.

Replaced all ignition componets and still missfires and poor power through out rpm range

What I found online that made the most sense, weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or CAT converter blokked up. One suggestion offered was to disconnect the O2 sensor and see if that helped.

Sounds like it could be the transmission or torque converter - have you tried flushing the transmission? What's the mileage on the car?

Has code 0420

This code indicates that the catalytic converter is not functioning properly. This could be due to a poor state of tune and the poor running engine is overloading the cat to the point where it can't control the emissions, or the cat is simply worn out and needs to be replaced.

BAD ENGINE NOISE RIGHT AFTER REPLACING TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP

if poor performance was noticed right off the bat, the timing belt is not timed properly. this will cause lack of power, rough idle, pre ignition(little noisey), and rich exhaust.youre going to need to first, find a friend or someone whom you trust to do your automotive work.second youre going to need to start over by tearing it all down systematically and taking note of anything done wrong. third find reliable information on the timing marks for this vehicle. i hope for your sake nothing is broken. let me know how this turns out, ill be happy to help further if you need.
